- POW! Kills Web Pop-Up Ads

If you surf the Web very much, you certainly have encountered
those obnoxious pop-up ads. You go to somebody's personal home

page on GeoCities or Tripod or any of a few thousand other
sites,
and a second, pop-up window appears that tries to sell
something
you have no interest in. Now a simple utility called POW! will

automatically close pop-up windows for you. I tried it and
found
that POW! really works.

POW! runs in the background on your Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000
computer. POW watches and waits for one of those nasty windows
to
open up and then POW! It slaps the miscreant ad down just
like
Adam West did when he was Batman! When you install POW! it
already
contains a list of many obnoxious pop-up ads; it will close
any of
those ads as soon as they appear on your screen. Best of all,
you
can configure POW! to close any new pop-ups that you run
across.

To add a pop-up ad to kill to the list, you wait until the
pop-up
appears and then click on the POW! icon in the System Tray.
This
will bring up a menu, where you select 'Add/Delete Popup'.
This
will bring up a listing of all the windows that are open on
your
computer at this moment that POW! can detect. Just highlight
the
listing for the window you want to automatically be killed in
the
future, which will appear at the bottom of this list; it will

then appear on the POW! list. Next, click on 'OK', and you
should
see the window go bye-bye in a second! That particular pop-up
ad
will automatically be closed if it ever appears in the future
on
your computer.

I review a lot of new programs for this newsletter. Frequently
I
install a program, learn it, write about it, and then
uninstall
the program. Not this time, however. POW! remains on my PC,
and I
expect to use it as long as advertisers keep producing those
obnoxious pop-up ads.

POW! is a free program. No ads or anything. I like free. It is

also a tiny program and a quick download from:

You can find a lot of useful free programs like POW! at:

My thanks to Gord Hines for letting me know about POW!
