I also looked in "The Howland Heirs" by William M. Emery published in 1919. It contains a great deal of Howland genealogy down from Gideon Howland down to the early 20th century. Some of the early material is material is incorrect such as Henry Howland being listed as the owner of a cow in Plymouth in 1624 (miss read but often quoted document) and the wife of Henry being Mary Newland. This also has been disproved but is quoted extensively in print.
The more recent genealogy was pretty good however because it was used in court in relationship to the distribution of inheritance of Hetty Howland Robinson Green, the richest woman in the world at the turn of the 20th century.

There are several Benjamin Franklin Howlands in it, but none appear to be yours.
