Subject: [CO-Roots] 1881 Boarding house fire Sixteen men die
Date: Wed, 19 Mar 2003 07:23:15 -0800 (PST)

Hi all

I am looking for information on a boarding house fire
that occured in 1881 in Colorado. I found a newspaper
artical on ancestoy.com in the historical newspaper
archives "the Daily Gazette" dated 3 Mar 1881 the
artical titled "Sixteen Men Burned to Death and Many
others injured" the men listed as died were: Patrick
Foley, Michael Donohue, Thomas Foster, James Curran,
John Reilly, John Kennedy, Jerry Hanlan, John Connors,
James Connelly and John Duffy. amon those sent to the
hospital(and persumming later died) were John
Connelly, Martin Laffery, Michael Morgan Michael
Leonard, Hugh McKeon and William Barr.

according to the artical the men were workmen employed
by either the Pittsburg & Lake Erie Railroad company
or the Davis-Island Dam Co. the boarding house was
located seven miles from a city Pittsburg Colorado a
section of Rock Cut.

I am not familar with the regions of Colorado or even
where this is located.

I would like to know about these men especialy about
James Curran. I have a gggrandfather named James
Milton Curran b. WVa 1856 who migrated with some of
his relation brothers sisters and cousins to
Colorado-Oklahoma-Kansas area. the Family really don't
know what happened to him. Family story goes like
this: He rode off one day and was never seen or heard
of since. according to family lore that my
gggrandfather James milton Curran was known to carry
large sums of money and was robed killed and thrown
down a mine shaft or an abandond well and never found.
I am wondering if this is just a made up story to
soothe some of the family members on what acctually
happened to him. I am laying odds that this james
Curran is in fact my gggrandfather. so I am hoping
that maybe some one out there can help me out in
finding more information on this boarding house fire.

any info anyone can offer would greatly be
appreciated.
