Pat

The collieries in the Clutton area were on land owned
by the Earl of Warwick. There had been mining in this
area since the early 1600s at least, and Fry's Bottom
dates from before 1838. However, it was out of use in
1887 and was abandoned in 1895.

There is further information in "The History of the Somerset
Coalfield" by Down & Warrington (Pub. 1974).
