Hi all,
I'm new to this list and am also curious about John Wintrip's question. I
have ancestors who came to the US (Pennsylvania, Schuylkill Co.) sometime
between 1820-1838 to work in the coal mines, from England and Wales (counties
unknown... yet!), and I'm curious if they came here on their owning hoping
that things were better in the US, or if they were lured here from
prospective employers and had guarantees of employment.

I cannot imagine getting off a ship in a foreign country, even if you speak
the same language, with little money and no set job or home to go to...

Thanks for any thoughts or info...
