Paul,

Monkwearmouth is in the northern part of Sunderland i.e. north of the river
Wear.

Wreath Hill (Wreath Quay Road) was the road at the southern boundary of
Wearmouth Colliery, the census gives his occupation as Colliery Labourer
(Miner), in which case he would have worked at Wearmouth Colliery - he
literally lived yards away from it, the other collieries in Sunderland at
the time being Hylton (Castletown), Ryhope and Silksworth.

Wreath Quay Road still exists although it has changed substantially since
then and the Wearmouth Colliery site is now "The Stadium Of Light" - home of
Sunderland AFC.

The area at the time of the 1881 census was a hive of activity - ship
building, brick works, potteries etc.

My gr gr grandfather John Byrne and his wife Anne came from Ireland during
the famine to work as a Miner's laborer and lived at Wreath Hill,
Monkwearmouth Co Durham in 1881.
I would like to know which mines or industries were in use at that time in
the area.
Any help would be greatly apreciated. Thank you.
Paul Broughton.
