I have two files that were passed to me by this very nice gentleman. I
thought that they should be shared with the group. You will find some
very good information on the Cockrell family as well as the South family
of Breathitt County.
I have asked him to join the group. As yet he has not given me

I was surfing the net the other day and came across this document on
which mentions my gr-gr-gr-grandmother Mary Magdalen Cockrell and her
15(!) children. It seems to be missing any details on her eldest son
(3rd child) Samuel South (my gr-gr-grandfather) and I just happen to
have those details, which I attach at the end of this note. Perhaps you
can forward it to whomever is maintaining that data.

Following was written for The Frankfort Cemetery Company by Major
General (then Colonel) E. E. Hume in reference to lot #247 and is dated
9 Dec, 1941.
Memorandum for the Frankfort Cemetery Company
(descendants of Colonel Samuel South 1833-1889)
He was the eldest son of Colonel Jere Weldon South (1805 - 1880) and
Mary Magdalen Cockrell (1811 - 1873), his wife who are buried in the
adjoining lot in the Frankfort Cemetery.
He was married to Malvry Blackwell Jett (1840-1911) by whom he had nine
children. Three of them died in childhood and are buried in the lot at
the Frankfort Cemetery. Their names were: Samuel South, Beriah Magoffin
South and Thomas Jackson (Stonewall) South.
Six children lived to adult years and all married. Their names, in the
order of their birth, and the names of their children are:
1. Mary Ellen South (1858-1915), married Dr. Enoch Edgar Hume
(1844-1911) and had two children: (1) Colonel Edgar Erskine Hume, U. S.
Army; married Mary Swigert Hendrick and has one son, Edgar Erskine Hume,
Jr. (2) Eleanor Marion Hume; married Henry Frederick Offutt, deceased,
and has one child, Eleanor Hume Offutt.
2. Annie South; married Stephen Fitzjames Trabue, Jr., both deceased
and had two children; (1) Virginia Taylor Trabue and (2) Marion South
Trabue. Both are living, unmarried. Annie South Trabue and her husband
are both buried in the Trabue lot, Frankfort Cemetery.
3. Jerry Curtis South (1857-1930), deceased; married Ellen Chappell
Hargis (living) and has one son; Lieutenant Jerry Curtis South, Jr.,
U.S. Navy who is married and has two children.
4. Martin Van Buren South, deceased, twice married, first to Lucy
McGinnis, deceased, by whom he had two daughters. (1) Anne Keith South,
married Bernie Bergholtz, and has several children; (2) Isabel Glover
South, married Ernst Hoge, both living, and have one child Marion South
Hoge, who is herself married and has issue. By his second wife,
deceased, Martin Van Buren South had two children, both living and both
have issue: they are Robert South and Aileen South.
5. John Glover South (1873-1940), deceased, married Christine Duncan
Bradley, living. They had no issue. Dr. John Glover South is buried in
the Bradley lot in the Frankfort Cemetery.
6. Gertrude South, living; married Dr. Thomas Lindsey Blayney, living ,
and has issue (1) Lucy Lindsay Blayney, deceased (buried in the
Frankfort Cemetery); (2) John McCluskey Blayney, Jr., who has been twice
married and has issue by each marriage; and (3) Lindsay Blayney, Jr.,
who is married and has issue.
