"Levi was noted for his labors in behalf of fugitive slaves, prior to
the war of 1861 and to the freemen during and after the war. In 1876 he
published a book of Reminiscences. His early life was passed in North
Carolina, whence he removed to Indiana, 1826 and thence in 1847 to
Cincinnati, Ohio. He died in his residence in Avondale, a suburb of
