1903: Miss Susan Nolan has resigned her position at the central office of the
Colorado Telephone Company and the place is now filled by Miss Lenox.
1907: E.L. Smith has purchased a new cash register; all mistakes will be
rectified by it.
1910: Electric lights have been installed on the fountain in the town park in
red, white and blue.
1914: C.R. Carroll bought the Lougheed engine and sawmill and is at present
cutting lumber at the Occidental switch.
1918: Dr. Henry J. French arrived the first of the week and reopened the late
Dr. Lininger's dental office.
1922: Mrs. Arch Mauldin and Miss Dorothy Richman are now the regular
operators at the telephone exchange.
1926: An attempt will be made to open the road to the Blue Lakes next summer.
About 40 cars made the climb this season but the strain cannot be beneficial
to the innerds [sic] of the motors.
1930: Louise Hansen, a great-granddaughter of Hiram Vasquez and La Veta
product, is making a name for herself as a dancer on the screen in New York. She
was in "Broadway Melodies" and can be seen this evening at the Valencia Theater
in Walsenburg in "Paramount on Parade."
1933: It is said 50 La Veta men will be employed to help build the new
Apishapa road south of the Spanish Peaks.
1936: A new 30 by 20 foot stone and spruce log shelter house at Blue Lake is
now under construction and will cost about $1,500.
1939: John Ellis has purchased the interest of Jack DeVivier in Walsenburg
Electric.
1942: With the shortage of meat, Secretary of Agriculture Wickard has called
on the poultry industry to produce 200 million extra birds during the coming
fall and winter.
1946: La Veta High School will play six-man football this season and on the
schedule are Primero, Sopris and Hoehne, each of which the team will play
twice.
1950: George Drury, here for over 70 years, told Rotary about the growth and
development of timber in the local mountains during his lifetime.
1954: Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bailey and Amy Sue of Walsenburg enjoyed a
birthday dinner for Mrs. Bailey with Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Beamer and John Sunday.
1958: About 50 L.V.H.S. students and sponsors gathered at the Chuck Wagon in
Cuchara Saturday night for a dance party.
1962: Francisco Fort Museum is adding a new log cabin for a shop in which to
sell novelties.
1966: Elected officers of the senior class were Beverly Kirkpatrick,
president; Joe Geiser, vice president; Patricia Cruz, secretary and Nicky Hogland,
treasurer.

1902: A "Phone" was placed in position in the post office Wednesday. Billy
[Postmaster William H. Woodruff] will now have no idle moments.
1905: The regular meeting of the town trustees was held at the residence of
Mayor Bemen Tuesday night, when a tax of 10 mills was levied for the ensuing
year.
1909: Total enrollment in grades one through eight is 156 and the average
daily attendance is 140.
1913: Thomas Crumley is moving back to his ranch adjoining town after living
on his Indian Creek place for some time.
1917: A large number of people attended the farewell reception for the boys
who were called to the colors, followed by a social dance for the young people.

1921: The valuation of the La Veta School District is $1,716,407, or
virtually one-sixth of the entire county valuation.
1925: Travellers on the passenger train last night were given a shake-up and
scare when the engine collided with another on the top of the pass.
1928: Dick Baker and George Coleman have the contract to build a cement house
of roomy proportions on the Crouse ranch. Levy Construction Co. is moving
another house on the same place to a more convenient location.
1931: Two light freezes have not been very damaging, but just gentle
reminders that winter is nigh.
1934: The proceeds of the Pep Dance held last week netted the high school
$20.
1938: Ollie Howard and his orchestra from the Kaliko Kat Klub in Wichita,
Kans. will appear Sunday at Muleshoe Lodge. Admission is 85 cents.
1941: Died, James Warren "Jimmy" Ellis, son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Ellis of
Walsenburg, who was born in South Dakota in 1924. He leaves a sister, Betty
Jean, and his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. James H. Ellis of La Veta.
1945: Two ex-servicemen, Elden Falk and Melvin Dean, have re-entered La Veta
High School and rejoined the football team.
1949: Fourteen attended the all-day quilting and dinner at the Presbyterian
church Friday.
1953: In anticipation of the 1,000 head entered in the second annual Breeders
Association Sale next week, the size of the stockyards at the barn is being
doubled.
1958: The Redskins lost their first game in four starts by dropping to the
St. Mary Crusaders 24-0.
1961: John Beamer was installed Master Councilor of the local DeMolay
chapter.
1964: Patty Thompson was chosen homecoming queen with attendants Adelyn
Duzenack, Teresa Gordon, Patricia Cruz and Judy Bauer.
1967: Cindy Britton, Miss San Isabel, won the title of Miss Colorado Rural
Electric Sept. 28 in Montrose.

1903: Peter Verliff possessed quite a curiosity this week in the shape of an
apple tree blooming in his yard.
1907: The helpers at the round house quit work Tuesday on account of a cut of
20 cents in their wages.
1910: George Hansen has gone to Aguilar where in partnership with T.P. Steele
will conduct a moving picture show at the Majestic Theater and also
manufacture candy for wholesale trade.
1914: The older boys have formed a club for recreation and good healthy
amusement.
1918: People are advised to remain at home if they have colds, acute
catarrhal infections, or symptoms of such infections to avoid getting the Spanish
influenza.
1922: A piano has been placed in the school basement for gymnastic work.
1926: County Commissioner Allen Roush attended a meeting with a state
engineer who said the new highway will come into La Veta but will follow Front Street
through the McComb Addition rather than Oak Street as previously.
1930: The 63-pound squash raised by J.H. Dunbar may not be the biggest in the
world but should be enough for one ordinary family.
1933: Eighty railroad cars of San Luis Valley potatoes and vegetables passed
through here yesterday on the way to market.
1936: Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Crouse and Leora motored to Pueblo Monday to hear
President Roosevelt speak to a large crowd.
1939: Charles Galassini and Joe Robino get the credit for bringing in the
first deer of the season.
1942: Gilbert Arnold, who is taking a preparatory course in radio work at
Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley, spent the weekend visiting his
parents in La Veta.
1946: Elected senior class officers are Elden Falk, President; Carrol Young,
vice president; Verna Belle Moore, secretary and Harry Lee Moore, treasurer.
1950: William Jarrott of New Mexico purchased Kincaid's 203 registered
Herefords and has an option to buy R.L. Kincaid and Son's farms.
1954: President Eisenhower will celebrate his 64th birthday tomorrow in
Denver, with lunch at the Cherry Creek Country Club and dinner at the Brown Palace.

1958: Elected officers of the senior class were John Welsby, president; Tim
Pene, vice president; Rose Ann Scholes, secretary and Virginia Galvan,
treasurer.
1962: The Redskins beat the Rye Thunderbolts in Rye Friday 27-7 with
touchdowns by George Galvan, Pete Percifull and J.B. Geiser.

1901: A good body of ore was struck in the Duplex Company's property on the
West Spanish Peak last week.
1905: Mrs. W.T. Holmes entertained a few ladies with razzle-dazzle or the
"go 'way back and sit down" game last Saturday afternoon.
1909: J. G. Hector is painting the tipple at Oakview with a spraying machine.
1912: Edwin L. Smith purchased what was left of the stock of the Ladies
Bazaar and shipped it to his store in Monte Vista.
1916: Mrs. M.M. Springer has opened a Lunch Room in the former sample room of
the Springer Hotel.
1920: The tax levied for 1919 was 3.47 for the state and 8.50 for Huerfano
County, compared to 1.39 for Colorado and 7.30 for the county just five years
ago.
1924: About 175 people attended a musical program in the new school assembly
room, given by the P.T.A. but mainly given by high school students.
1927: About 300 people, including 50 from Walsenburg, attended the Cheese
Fest last Friday to kick off the new cheese industry in La Veta. They visited
dairy farms, inspected the new factory and had supper of foods made from cheese.
1931: The La Veta Mines Company, with W. R. Brush of Kansas president, is
developing a group of claims on Greyback Mountain where it has two tunnels
completed.
1935: Mr. and Mrs. James Firm took a three-week trip and saw the famous
"Dizzy" pitch four games in St. Louis.
1938: The new home being erected by H.A. Howard on Virginia Street is
progressing nicely and is ready for the inside work.
1941: The high school boys defeated the Pueblo Centennial Freshmen 19-0 last
week for their first win of the season.
1944: The entertainment staged by the B-Loyal circle of the Baptist Church
Friday evening netted $60 for the Blood Plasma Fund.
1948: A prairie fire destroyed considerable pasture on the Woodring, Ritter
and Walker ranches east of La Veta Tuesday.
1952: Wanted: A good used metronome. Will buy or rent. Notify Mrs. Walter
Hamilton.
1956: Died, Earl Flock, the brother of Mrs. Charles Ottinger and Mrs. Elva
Sharpless. He was buried in Oklahoma.
1960: The Redskins overwhelmed Manassa 67-6 in the homecoming game, led by
Wayne and Glenn Kreutzer with 27 and 25 points respectively.
1964: Sixty-five friends and relatives attended the open house at Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Arnold's apartment in the Farrar Apartment House Oct. 18.
1968: Gene Stigall sold his half of his house on east Francisco to his sister
and is building himself a small residence on east Virginia.
