1902: John Goemmer, with his daughters Minna and Louisa, has rented a room in
the Plaza for the winter months.
1905: F.W. Jaques has sold what is termed "the lost mine" to S.H. Springer
and Captain Barker.
1909: Alex Firm got lost in the fog Monday evening between La Veta and the
North Abeyta and might still be wandering around if it were not for the train
whistles.
1913: John Hamilton bought the G.B. Barnard ranch northeast of town which
will again consolidate the old Dotson place over of 600 acres.
1917: A Turkey Shoot provided amusement Thanksgiving afternoon though too
late for the big feed.
1920: Floyd Moore quit working at the family ranch and is going into business
with his brother Herbert in Trinidad.
1924: Nearly 150 people attended the Eastern Star banquet Friday night, even
more than expected. A large contingent came up from Walsenburg.
1928: A defective flue started a fire in the rooms occupied by Mr. and Mrs.
A.O. Willburn in the Plaza Tuesday.
1931: The cheese company receives from 4,000 to 8,000 pounds of milk daily
and expends some $2,500-$3,000 per month for it.
1934: Mrs. J.M. Crouse has purchased a new Chevrolet sedan. The old Reo had
run 75,000 miles.
1937: Ellis Smith was home for Thanksgiving from Colorado State Agricultural
College in Fort Collins.
1940: La Veta Light, Heat and Power has on sale appliances suitable for
Christmas gifts, such as the Manning-Bowman Toaster, Chrome Plated, Mica Element,
just $2.75.
1944: The Spanish Peaks Grange elected Walter Campbell, president, August
Peterson, secretary and Clifford Coe, treasurer.
1948: The Town, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and Chief Theater are making
plans for a big Christmas party Dec. 24 for the youngsters of the community.

1903: I.R. Voorhees has installed gas lights in the Kincaid Opera House, La
Veta Hotel and the Smith and Lawson stores.
1907: Flockhart and Sons will deliver coal from the Adamson mine on Indian
Creek for $4 a ton.
1911: Charles Mack has disposed of the rest of his fine ranch on the upper
Cucharas, to Mr. DeVietti although he retains 320 acres of timber land and an
interest in the sawmill. He is moving his family to Arizona for his wife's
health.
1915: Adam Flockhart was fined $200 for selling intoxicating liquors in town.

1919: Jap Bruce is taking a lay-off for a month; it has been a long time
since he spent a day loafing.
1922: The stock show will be on the northeast corner of Ryus and Main,
including the Kincaid corral, Colorado Fuel and Iron warehouse, the Wheeler barn,
railroad stockyards and the land adjoining, all of which will be fenced.
Admission 25 cents and 50 cents.
1926: Jimmie Bowdino and Clarence Kreutzer gave a dance in the Wahatoya
schoolhouse on Saturday which was enjoyed by many.
1930: We suggest the name of Garland Street be changed to "Teddy Street" for
there are seven houses in a row on the north side that contain young babies
along with other children.
1933: Davis Holmes and Mert Lupton have been accepted for duty in the Navy
and are leaving for training in San Diego.
1937: About 50 ladies attended the Parents-Teachers Association Silver Tea
entertainment.
1941: The entire high school has really been in an uproar this week since
America is in the war.
1945: Verna Bell Moore and Jewel Parker, both juniors, and Edith Marker,
sophomore, received all A's on the second six-week honor roll.
1949: The La Veta Indians basketball team last night nosed out the St. Mary
Crusaders 35-32 in La Veta.
1952: The town Christmas decorations have been put and lighted.
1958: Receiving straight A's at La Veta High School were Loren Albright,
Marian Huffman, John Beamer and Georgia Huffman.
1961: James Gribben, coach and teacher at L.V.H.S. the past two years, has
been appointed principal.
1965: Joseph Arnold Scholes, 18, has enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.
1968: About 60 fourth, fifth and sixth grade students went to Adams State
College Dec. 3 to see the Planetarium and Science Museum.
1968: Seniors on the honor roll are Irene Duzenack, Mitzi Masinton, Kim
Tesitor, Charles Sawyer, Brett Arnold, Mickey Schmidt, Larry Vernon, Juanita Vail,
John Britton, Lance Folse, Lynn Lehman and R.B. Long.

1900: Twenty pupils are enrolled at Sager School with teacher Walter P.
Powell.
1904: Cards are out announcing the marriage of John Kincaid and Edna Martin
on Thursday, Dec. 22.
1908: The Elk Livery displays a very attractive electric sign every evening -
the first of its kind in town.
1912: Died, George I. Drury of Dean, Las Animas County, 70. He was the Dean
postmaster and veteran of the Civil War. He leaves his wife, three daughters
and one son. He was buried in Trinidad.
1916: The Methodist ladies will have a bazaar in the Lester building tomorrow
and give a supper in the evening.
1920: The Commercial Club needs articles such as mounted specimens of fish,
bird and beast to advertise the San Isabel National Forest in the Congress
Hotel in Pueblo.
1924: Fenton Martin's new barn in north La Veta was completely destroyed by
fire along with 25 tons of hay inside.
1928: Sunday and Tuesday at the Crystal Theater, Jackie Coogan in "Buttons."
A sea picture with Jackie as one of the gobs. Also a good comedy.
1932: A Methodist Young People's Club was organized with Doris Dickinson,
president, George Smith, vice president and Neville Garren, secretary-treasurer.
1936: The population of the United States will reach the "saturation point"
about 1955 when it will be approximately 143,000,000 and should level off about
there.
1940: B-Loyal Circle will have a Bazaar Saturday in Mrs. Dryden's house on
Main Street, with chile, pie and coffee only two bits.
1944: Theodosia Dryden, La Veta's oldest citizen, died at the age of 94. She
was a resident here 52 years and leaves her son Fred, La Veta.
1948: About 50 attended the last P.T.A. meeting and were entertained by the
girls glee club and a tap dance by Sharron Jones.
1951: Eight-five new books costing $100 have been added to the grade and high
school library.
1955: Several county residents saw a flying saucer over Greenhorn Mountain
last night, the third such sighting this month.
1958: The Redskins defeated the St. Mary Crusaders 57-43 in the first cage
tilt of the season.
1962: La Veta High School Student of the Month Pete Percifull was a guest of
the Rotary Club Tuesday evening.
1966: Winners of the Voice of Democracy contest sponsored by the Walsenburg
V.F.W. were Patsy Magnino, Glenna Tracy and Barbara Leatherwood, all of
L.V.H.S.
1970: Patience Circle of the Methodist Church has been serving Rotary Club
dinners since the Park Lane Hotel burned down three years ago but the club will
now meet in the new restaurant at the Spanish Peaks Motor Inn.

1901: Santa Claus will be at J.M. Elrod's store today and will make a speech
to the GOOD boys and girls of La Veta.
1905: Woodmen of the World will have a Christmas Tree at 2 p.m. Christmas Day
in Kincaid Hall, for children only.
1909: There will be a Masquerade Ball in Kincaid Hall on Christmas Eve.
1912: With ice on the mill lake at 10 inches, harvesting will probably begin
the day after Christmas.
1915: The Hector, Stranger and Pickens families will have their annual
reunion in Stranger Hall Christmas night.
1918: A Wienie Roast was enjoyed by some of the young people at the lake
Friday evening.
1922: The ladies of the Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian churches are all
richer after their holiday bazaars and food sales.
1926: Residents in the Ritter district enjoyed a holiday party, program and
old fashioned games in the schoolhouse Tuesday evening.
1929: The Baptist Young People's Union substituted a taffy pull for the
scheduled skating party Friday evening because the ice was imperfect.
1933: The play put on by the faculty of the school Friday and Saturday nights
was attended by packed houses each night and netted $60 or $70.
1937: "Wee Willie Winkie" with Shirley Temple in her greatest role and
supported by a superb cast will be shown at the Rialto Dec. 24, 25 and 26.
1941: A good crowd was present at the Rialto Theater Friday evening to
discuss plans for future activities of the Huerfano County Association for National
Defense.
1945: After an absence of four years, Christmas lighting is shining on La
Veta's Main Street.
1948: Now is the time of year when everyone wants a leader ... preferably one
who drives reindeer.
1951: The La Veta school band will welcome Santa Claus on Christmas Eve day
when he visits the kiddies in the Chief Theater.
1954: The Methodist and Baptist churches will have their Christmas programs
and treats for the kids Sunday morning.
1958: Huerfano County Historical Society is having a drive to gain new
members. Memberships are $1 per year.
1963: The annual Christmas musical program put on by the school children was
a hit.
1966: Jim Willie, La Veta High School senior halfback, was chosen for the
Class A (eight-man) All-State football team.
1969: Ten people won frozen turkeys at Saturday night's Bingo game at Odd
Fellows Hall.
1972: United Methodist Church will host a "come and go" candlelit Christmas
Eve communion open to all.
