Huerfano World - January 1, 2004
1904: C.M. Green and son Judd have purchased the real estate, buildings and
stock of G.W. Ware for $2,300 and will operate the store on Main Street.
1908: The Output lately from the Oakdale mine has been between 400 and 700
tons a day.
1911: C. B. Barnard has purchased that portion of what is known as the Dotson
ranch lately owned by W.H. Hamilton for $8,000.
1915: Harry Hamilton is grading Ryus Park and removing the fence on the east
along Main Street so tourists may camp there.
1919: Albert Parks has received his big Winton 6, a $4,000 car and the
swellest machine, by far, in this section.
1923: The high school athletic association has been fixing up the Micheletti
building for basket ball games.
1927: Ellis Smith, whose calf won the state fair in Pueblo, Elton Holmes,
John Goemmer and Chester Springer will take their calves to the annual stock show
in Denver.
1930: Joe Ferrari returned from a business trip in California in just two
days, leaving Los Angeles at 5 p.m. Tuesday and arriving here at 6 p.m. Thursday.
1933: The Camp Fire girls prepared Christmas dinners and delivered them to
some of the elderly around town.
1936: Rotary Club will honor 11 former La Veta High School students who are
now enrolled in universities or colleges.
1940: According to the latest report, mountain lion, coyote and bobcats are
increasing in numbers in the San Isabel National Forest while elk and black
bears are decreasing.
1944: Old Timer - anyone who can remember when a person could leave a package
of cigarettes posed on a desk with impunity.
1948: The high school journalism class went to Walsenburg last week to see
The Advertiser and Huerfano County News press room and was told about the
process by editors Engberg and Gault.
1952: Better than $2,000,000 passed through the county treasurer's office
this year, representing 96.12 percent of the amount to be collected.
1956: It is foolish for a man to contradict his wife. If he just waits a
while she'll do it herself.
1959: Died, Percy Clarence Carver, 86, who was born in 1873 in Kansas and
came to Huerfano County in 1898.
1963: There was a fine snowfall but it all melted before Christmas Day.
1967: The men and women's basketball team beat the high school boys and girls
in a double header coached by Jo Nason and Frankie Heikes.
1971: Brett Arnold, L.V.H.S. senior, has been selected for the 1971 eight-man
all-state football team.

Huerfano World - January 8, 2004
1901: Pike's Peak Consolidated Coal Company is [sic] now employing 13 men at
the mines. We would advise Evans Jones to either chop one off or add another.
We are not superstitious but 13 - ugh, it makes us shiver.
1905: For Sale: Pure Missouri Sorghum, 85 cents a gallon or in five gallon
lots, 75 cents. See F.M. Kerr.
1909: For Sale: Some good lots in South La Veta at $30 with Warranty deeds -
Harry Capps.
1913: About 25 railroad cars of ice have been loaded for the Pinon Supply
Company and Walsenburg Mercantile Company.
1917: E.L. Smith now has William McLain driving a delivery wagon out to the
coal mines.
1921: Joe Ross and James Mahaney, both proficient musicians, have returned to
the school for the blind in Colorado Springs.
1925: There are approximately 70,000 irrigated acres, scattered over an area
of 1,500 square miles, in Water District 16, with about 50,000 in Huerfano
County and 20,000 in Pueblo County.
1930: The road scraper considerably improved some of our streets, which were
becoming something like fields prepared for grain.
1934: The Summers brothers moved off their Wahatoya ranch Saturday and Tony
Bowdino has taken possession.
1937: La Veta Light, Heat and Power has installed floodlights in the railroad
yards which is to the advantage of the stockmen moving their cattle at the
stockyards.
1941: John Smalley received a broken leg when he was caught by a failing rock
in his coal mine on Middle Creek.
1945: The La Veta Red Cross chapter is seeking more workers for the local
sewing room.
1949: The temperature bottomed out at 12 below zero this week.
1953: Died, Mrs. Margaret Ellen Young, a resident of Huerfano County since
1921. She leaves her husband Charles A., sons James, Jack, and Hugh, all of La
Veta, and daughters Emma Williams and Carol Naglich.
1958: Six Pueblo youths are suspected to have been involved in stealing 11
band instruments valued at between $1,500 and $2,000 from La Veta High School.
1962: Sixty-nine couples took out marriage licenses during 1961 from County
Clerk Conrad Cordova, four more than in 1960.
1966: Ben Seaman of La Veta won the drawing for the first 1966 license plate,
and Tony Masinton gets #2.
1970: Charles Masinton of La Veta, a grocer, was recently presented a
26-year perfect attendance award by Rotary Club President Proctor Hayes.
1974: Anyone who applies for or renews a Colorado driver's license must now
have a Social Security number.

Huerfano World - January 22, 2004
1904: Walter Powell has been engaged to teach the Baker district school and
will take charge after completing his term in the Sager district.
1908: Ice cutting commenced last Sunday and about 20 teams have been busy
each day hauling to the [railroad] cars. A total of 1,800 tons have been
contracted for.
1912: At the Photo-Play To-Night, a great railway picture, song and a good
comedy. Shows at 7:30, 8:20 and 9:10. All seats ten cents.
1916: Ice hauling is in progress today.
1919: Fifty-seven calves from this place were shipped to Denver as a
contribution to the Red Cross.
1923: "Peck's Bad Boy" Jan. 24-25 at the Crystal Theater, ten cents and 25
cents admission.
1927: Earl Kreutzer won $152 as second prize in the calf club class on his
yearling at the Denver stock show.
1930: A few hours of balmy weather yesterday was followed by a temperature of
19 below zero in La Veta, 27 below at the Goemmer ranch and 30 below on La
Veta Pass.
1933: Two electric light poles in the east part of town were blown down
Wednesday.
1936: Joe Robino and Charles Masinton have purchased the I.G.A. store from
Tony DeAngeles and Charles Cassio will move back to Trinidad with his family.
1940: Eastern Star installed Gladys Stansbury, W.M., Arthur Peachey, W.P.,
Mary Ellis, treasurer and Constance Ghiardi, secretary.
1944: The La Veta plant of La Luna Excelsior Company shipped the first of an
order for 30 [railroad] carloads of shook to Cuba Tuesday. Shook is box
material and will be used in Cuba for pineapple crates.
1948: La Veta High School defeated Hoehne 47-27 with Albert Robino the "big
gun" with 28 points.
1952: The snow course on La Veta Pass was measured at 40.3 inches compared to
41.4 inches last April.
1956: The Redskins will play host to the St. Mary Crusaders tomorrow evening
in a benefit game for the March of Dimes.
1959: Albert Amiday Jr., operator of Top O' La Veta, Inc., says the ski run
on La Veta Pass will be open this weekend.
1961: Lorraine Hector is serving as La Veta correspondent to the Huerfano
World in the absence of the regular one.
1965: Francisco Fort Museum hosted 6,794 visitors during the 1964 season,
coming from every state in the country plus nine foreign countries.
1969: Mr. and Mrs. John Tompkins announce the engagement of their
granddaughter Bobby Dell Cowden to James Wilcox.
1973: Dick Colvin was appointed to the Huerfano County Planning and Zoning
Commission after the resignation of Jack Britton.

Huerfano World - January 29, 2004
1903: A conspicuous sign adorns the summit of the Springer Hotel which can be
seen from the railroad.
1907: The Eggleston Skating Rink is the great attraction for our citizens
every evening.
1911: Karl Spielmann is about to commence the construction of a reservoir on
his ranch west of town.
1914: Ice cutting has again commenced. A 500-ton contract has been secured
which will fill about 25 [railroad] cars.
1918: The Ghiardi and Company delivery wagon has been making just two trips a
week to Ojo due to the bad snow drifts.
1922: Albert Noel and George Price are trying to establish a professional
radio station here.
1925: The Huerfano Timber and Transportation Company is shipping a mill over
from Blanca to set up in the Indian Creek district.
1928: Roy Heikes is laying a new floor in the Crystal Theater.
1931: Mrs. Carl Falk saved her child, bird and most of the furniture when
fire burned her house, the old Goemmer ranch house near the butte.
1935: Thirteen-year-old Frank Smith won the state championship on his
Ramboulette sheep at the stock show in Denver.
1938: Eugene Vories of Grand Junction was visiting his mother Mrs. Lulu
Vories the latter part of last week.
1941: The junior class play, "Everybody's Crazy Now," will be given in the
high school auditorium Thursday and Friday, Feb. 6 and 7, Admission 25 cents.
1945: Mrs. Lola Masinton and two sons, who have been living in Walsenburg,
have returned to La Veta to make their home.
1948: Mollie Griego and Richard Charlifue were married Jan. 17 attended by
Mr. and Mrs. Dart Chavez. Richard will try out for the Duncan, Okla. baseball
team in the Sooner League.
1951: The Redskins ventured to Avondale Saturday night and came home with
their sixth victory of the season, winning 28-24 with Earl Carver scoring 22
points.
1955: At the Spur Sunday and Monday, "Bengal Brigade" starring Rock Hudson
and Arlene Dahl plus, "This is Your Army" in Technicolor.
1958: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Firm were given a surprise housewarming party in
their new home.
1962: Much damage to trees and structures occurred during the 36-hour
terrific wind storm.
1966: Airman Joseph Arnold Scholes has been selected for training as an Air
Force administrative specialist at Amarillo AFB, Tex.
1970: Sue Rohr was installed Worthy Advisor of La Veta Assembly #75, Order of
Rainbow for Girls.
