Huerfano World - February 5, 2004

1902: F.G. Bombard and wife moved into Francisco Plaza this week, where they
will keep house.
1906: About 35 students attended the high school card party, recitation and
games at the Hill residence Friday sponsored evening by the sophomore class.
1910: About 700 [railroad] cars of coal were shipped from the Oakdale mine
this past month.
1913: Al Coleman is hauling stone to his lots on Field Street where he will
build a barn and then a house.
1916: The Parsons Brothers of near Stonewall have purchased $5,000 worth of
cattle from the Kreutzer Brothers.
1920: For Sale: Eight year old team with harness, weight about 1,400 pounds
each, price $400. Inquire of J.H. Jones.
1923: The new bakery and chili parlor opened by Mr. and Mrs. Burke on Main
Street is already receiving attention for the good home-made bread.
1927: The foundation of the new Methodist Church is completed up to ground
level and will rise four more feet to complete the basement portion.
1930: The La Veta National Farm Loan Association elected as directors J.E.
Coe, Eugene Ellis, John Elley, J.M. Crouse and John Kreutzer.
1933: The ground hog saw his shadow as usual; it is a dead cinch anyway we
won't have ideal weather during the next six weeks.
1936: Some culverts on Oak Street are being enlarged to carry the water which
has heretofore run over the street.
1939: C.F. Hector has established a natural history museum in his house.
1942: All men of La Veta between the ages of 20 and 45 who are not already
registered must register for the Selective Service Monday, Feb. 16, 9 a.m. to 6
p.m. in Town Hall.
1946: First graders on the honor roll are Lowell Goemmer, Claire Carver,
Karel Ann McKinney, Nora Lee Frankeburger, Georgina Duzenack, Carol Taft and
Donald Ball.
1950: The Santi Oil Company of Walsenburg is building a new bulk gasoline and
oil distribute station just behind Kopine's Railroad Park Service Station on
Main Street.
1954: Mr. and Mrs. John Baily announce their daughter Marjorie will marry
Charles Keeling Jr. Feb. 7 in the Baptist Church.
1957: The Denver and Rio Grande section crew discovered an airplane near La
Veta Pass with two bodies inside.
1961: Freshmen receiving all A's for the past six weeks are George Albright
and Karen Kmetz.
1965: La Veta received a much-needed wet snow Sunday.
1969: Mildred's Fine Foods, featuring Mexican Food and Homemade Pies and
Bread, is open from 6 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sundays and 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. weekdays.
Closed Mondays.

1900: The copper miners at Ojo are planning to build a stamp mill and smelter
as soon as the weather clears.
1904: The Ladies Aid Society of the Presbyterian Church, including the new
band, will give a Patriotic Musical Feb. 12 in Kincaid's Hall. Admission 25
cents.
1908: Mrs. Francisco and Dr. Wilkinson are preparing to level and plant grass
on some vacant lots they own on Francisco Street.
1912: F.M. Eggleston and Sons are building a 20 by 60 foot addition on the
east side of their livery barn at the corner of Francisco and Main streets.
1915: Sterge Mavrodis bought out H.W. Stewart's interest in the billiard
parlor on Main Street last week.
1919: The Misses Cepha and May Arnold have returned from Texas and are again
keeping house for their father Asa on the ranch up the Cucharas.
1922: The post office is to be moved to its new location one-half block north
on Main Street next Sunday.
1926: J.M. Gilstrap has purchased the building south of E.C. Stream's store
from E.L. Smith and will move his bakery to that location.
1930: Proctor Hayes and Lila Lenox were married in the Methodist Church in
Walsenburg, and will make their home on the Hayes ranch south of La Veta.
1934: John Elley has sold his ranch south of La Veta to Amadio Cassai.
1937: La Veta schools re-opened Monday after a three-week enforced vacation
due to the ban on public gatherings to prevent contagious diseases from
spreading.
1940: The W.P.A.'s $50,000 water project to provide La Veta with two storage
lakes will be completed this week and water may be turned into the basin at
once.
1944: Car license tabs are being sold this year instead of plates because of
the steel shortage.
1948: The only high school students receiving straight A's were Edith Marker,
senior, and Mildred Howlett, junior.
1951: Children are natural mimics. They act like their parents in spite of
every effort to teach them good manners.
1955: The Owen and Lee Drilling Company's Claudia Capps No.1 in the northwest
portion of Sec. 24, T28, R65, eight miles southeast of Walsenburg, was
spudded in.
1958: Tomorrow is the last day for using 1957 license plates.
11%2: The Redskins defeated Saguache 58-36 with Fred Scholes and Dick Willcox
leading the scoring with 12 points each.
1966: Formal opening of the new Park Lane Hotel Coffee Shop under the new
owners Lee and Sammy Hopson will be Saturday.
1970: Donald Andreatta of Bear Creek was hired as cattle inspector for First
National Bank in Walsenburg.

1901: The young men of the Woodmen of the World presented a hilarious
minstrel entertainment Thursday and the ladies provided an elegant supper after the
show, followed by dancing.
1905: The westbound passenger train got stuck in a snowdrift a half mile
below town and another engine was dispatched to help.
1909: An exciting runaway occurred last Tuesday in which the La Veta
Mercantile Company's horse broke loose from the hitching post where he was tied.
1913: Quincy Zimmerman sold his ranch on Middle Creek to J.E. Coe of Tercio
for $4,500.
1916: The Town of La Veta offers a $5.00 reward for information leading to
the conviction of anyone breaking electric light globes.
1920: The Atlas Construction Company was incorporated with $50,000 by R.W.
Atchison, W.O. Van Etten, H.M. Stockwell, Paul Ghiardi, L.M. Kreutzer and Allen
Roush to undertake all types of construction.
1924: About 30 people attended the public meeting about dairying in town hall
last Tuesday presented by the State Dairy Commission.
1928. The cheese factory is now receiving about 6,500 pounds of milk daily
and ships an average of 75 boxes or 3,750 pounds of cheese every week.
1931: The Commercial Club elected C.C. Webster, president; Carl Gilbert, vice
president; Paul Lee, secretary and Dr. C.E. Willburn, treasurer.
1934: The La Veta Follies presented by Mr. King's tumbling class grossed
$57.50 for the school.
1938: The Commercial Club is working on getting a golf course for La Veta,
probably at a site near the town reservoir.
1942: The Advisory Board for Selective Service in La Veta is C.C. Webster,
Mary Stranger, Julia M. Lively and E.C. Stream.
1945: The E.C. Stream General Merchandise firm of La Veta is celebrating its
25th anniversary of opening this week.
1950: Dorothy Kopine attended the International Ski Meet in Aspen, the first
in the United States, where she saw skiers from 14 countries and Gary Cooper.
1954: A total of 2,866 vehicle license plates were issued by the county
clerk's office by Feb.13, 33 less than last year.
1957: The snow on La Veta Pass was measured at 48.5 inches compared to 33
inches last year and the long-term average of 26.8 inches.
1961: Died, Charles Kimsey in Baltimore Feb. 12. He left La Veta in 1915.
Survivors include his sisters Laura Doty and Katherine Laird and nephews Luther
and Robert Bruce.
1965: Skiing and sledding were the order of the day for young and old Sunday
afternoon before the heavy snow started that night.

1900: William Krier is staging a huge shoe sale prior to moving his family
and business to Walsenburg.
1904: W.H. Gould has purchased a $480 coach to haul tourists around to
various points of interest during the summer months.
1908: Mayor Capps passed a petition to submit to railroad officials to
replace the passenger train service between here and Cucharas.
1912: Mrs. O.P. Stephens sold her residence and property to Dr. S.J. Lamme
for $1,500 and moved to Spokane, Wash.
1915: The wagon roads from Stonewall and across the divide and down the
Cucharas should be improved for use by automobile owners for a pleasure and scenic
drive.
1919: The La Veta Light, Heat and Power Company changed its rates to 12 ½
cents meter rate and a $1 minimum per month per Kw, with a 10 percent discount
for prompt payment.
1923: The new coal mine being opened by the Oakdale Coal Company near the
Black Hills is beginning to hire men.
1928: The American Legion took in $115 through the sale of tickets for last
Saturday night's dance.
1932: The new rule prohibiting children from P.T.A. meetings unless
accompanied by their parents proved very successful during the last meeting on Tuesday
afternoon.
1936: Tom Wheeler is moving the old Meredith Martin house to his lots in
town.
1940: The B-Loyals Club will give a Leap Year Chili Supper Thursday, Feb. 29.
Price 25 cents.
1944: The Independent Party has nominated Agnes Holmes for mayor, Bonnie Hern
clerk, Lulu Kincaid, treasurer and Belle Hector, Mary Judiscak, Steve
Shoemaker, Julia Lively, Sylvia Dillon and Pearl Dissler for trustees.
1948: Lola Masinton, chairman of the March of Dimes campaign in La Veta, says
the collection was $72.11.
1951: Pupils of the fifth and sixth grades will present an operetta, "Tom
Sawyer," Tuesday evening in the high school auditorium.
1955: A nuclear explosion planned for tomorrow at the Nevada proving grounds
was postponed due to unstable weather.
1959: A re-organization plan providing for the setting up of two school
districts for Huerfano County was adopted Wednesday evening.
1962: The Stitch-Away 4-H Club was organized Feb. 14 with Mrs. Edward
Fitzpatrick leader and Bobby Willis junior leader.
1966: The engagement of Sheryl Dian Fieser and Curtis Goemmer has been
announced.
1970: Some 38 relatives and friends attended the surprise 60th birthday party
for Ewell Woodring Wednesday evening, Feb. 18.
