I agree, it is "quite a treasure" -- a fine little general
book on Colemans. I bought mine in the early 1970s. It
came with a full size color coat of arms to frame. I liked
these books so well, I bought the one for Green & Powell as
well. It is a good pulling of general info on a surname
into one volume. I bet it was from these books that Nancy
Halbert got her idea for her books. I am not sure why
Halbert is so hated, but perhaps it is due to
misrepresentation which causes disappointed buyers. I
bought Halbert's World Book of Greens & like it. I believe
AGRI was a lot more economical than Halbert & perhaps that
is another reason why Halbert is hated. AGRI also has many
pages duplicated in each of their other surname books just
like Halbert, but it is useful info. Both the companies
should have sold the general info in a separate companion
volume. Blame it on sales tactics. This turns people off
from buying all of their ancestors' books from Halbert or
AGRI. I suppose AGRI went out of business before Halbert
came in business.
I have heard from an armigerous HIGH, that the HIGH arms in
Halbert seems to have been fabricated by Halbert. He is
sure of it from his work in getting a grant of arms from
the College of Arms in London. Now that fabrication by
Halbert in my opinion is a scam (if true)! It is bad
enough that we have no claim to the coats of arms since we
are not (usually) the senior representator of the arms that
is alive today. Only one person has a right to one's
ancestors' arms at a time. I have heard in some countries
that arms belong to a family, but I doubt it. Opinions to
the contrary (or in agreement) are welcome. I will try to
be silent on rebuttal. Send comments to the list.
The only country I know of that grants families a heraldic
device is Scotland. I am speaking of Scotland's clan
badges that are property of all the clansmen. Of course
"clansmen" should be defined, I think.
I appreciate & respect AGRI's map showing the counties in
England where Colemans are heaviest. But, speaking of
Scotland, Colman & McColman are allied to Clan Buchanan
(albeit only in America) & since my Colemans are lost in
1600s VA, even though I think it is unlikely they are
Scottish, we can take in the games as Buchanans & support
that clan athletically & morally & financially at the games
for the sake of the Colemans of Scotland that share the
surname with us & for the sake of promoting our heritage &
genealogy to our otherwise disinterested close kin who
without the Scottish music-dance-athletics-genealogy at the
festival-gathering-games of the Scotch would not be able to
get excited about genealogy.
In favor of our Colemans of colonial America being Scottish
recall that James VI of Scotland = James I of England
started the plantations in N.Ireland at the start of his
reign I think i.e. about 1603. Right? Thereby creating
Scotch-Irish who are still fighting the Catholics today &
have been fleeing the unrest in N. Ireland since day one
which is therefore before Jamestown (1607)?
I believe the Irish in seeking independence in the 1920s
bombed the archives in Dublin thus Shermanizing the
ancestry of all Irish -- both Scotch & Catholic.
OK, tell the list where I am wrong. I will try to be
silent. The whole Scotch-Irish & Scotch idea is probably
not verifiable due to lack of records & is doubtful anyway.
I acknowledge that.
If I am losing credibility by using the word Scotch, N.B.
Burns used it this way & mom's English history textbook
used it in the early 1900s before the Scottish school
system adopted the King's English. Today's Scots frown &
hate the word Scotch used for Scot & Scottish as all know
who regularly attend these Scottish genealogical games.
I recommend we all attend the games in one's own state &
support one's ancestral clans. There is a link to
"2.Scottish Gathering-Games World-wide" from my
"26.Scottish Pages".
