Subject: COLEMAN Family of SC>GA>AL
Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1999 15:18:45 -0700
Greetings:
I am researching my branch of the COLEMAN, (also COLMAN), family which
has some things in common with those addressed. First, I am unable to
make any connection with the other Coleman lines especially those of
Virginia though there are many similarities and second, my line were of
Scot-Irish descent and I believe most of the Coleman lines discussed
claim to be from England or Wales.
From a great aunt, Laura Kolb Coleman, I have a letter in which she
explains that according to her father, William A. Coleman, b.1838 in
Cobb co., GA., our Coleman family name had not always had the same
spelling and that the spelling COLMAN was used. She also said that our
Coleman family were of Scot-Irish descent and came from northern Ireland
to America in the early 1700's settling in Charleston, SC. I have a
biography of my gg-grandfather William Allen Coleman,s/o Henry Allen
Coleman, b. 1814 in Putnam county, GA. , which says that his grandfather
was George Coleman of South Carolina who came to Georgia early in the
1800's.
Now I am attempting to find George Coleman and his roots but without
much luck. I have found three interesting and possible leads but have
not surfaced anything with them yet. One is a George Colman whch
appears in a Charleston, SC census for the year 1800, and another is a
James Coleman who married Rachel Kolb in SC and appears in the 1790/1800
census for SC in the Newbery and Darlington Districts. In other
references the same person appears as James George Coleman. He or hhis
son by the same name moved to Butler county, Alabama where that family
branched out to Wilcox and othe AL counties in the area. A third lead
is Thompson Coleman of Wilkes co.,GA. who's will was also recorded in
Putnam co., GA. and doesn't seem to connect with any of the other
Coleman lines either. Thompson Coleman was the son of a James Coleman
of Pittsylvaia, VA.
Below is some data on my Coleman family. I have posted it before but
am doing so again. Right now I'm at a brick wall. If any of You all
have a suggestion or comment I'd be most interested in hearing from you
at: THANKS.
Woody Coleman.
I am researching the family, and ancestors and descendents of the
following Coleman family.
I would appreciate greatly, any information, relative to this family.

early 1800's. His family was of Scotch-Irish descent and came to
America from northern Ireland in the early 1700's. He was married to

in Putnam county, GA.
on 30 Jun 1825. William Allen describes himself as in poor condition
and names as his heirs
