From "Nashville, Athens of the South" by Henry McRaven, comes the following passage concerning J.C. COMBS: (I hope I can manage to type it accurately.)
Page 144:
Nashville Had its Capital City Cycling Club and held races at Cunberland Park. Riders from Shelbyville, Tullahoma, Columbia, Lebanon, Murfreesboro, Gallatin, Springfield, Clarksville, Union City, and many riders of world-wide reputation were among the contestants in such tournaments. Most of the members of the Capital City Cycling Club participated in the annual hundred-mile run held July 4, 1892. They left the Custom House at 3:30 A.M. and had breakfast in Lebanon. Lunch was served at Eagleville at 10:00 and dinner at Murfreesboro, another lunch in the afternoon at Triune, and supper in Nashville. The distance of about 111 miles was covered in eight and one half hours running time, with three hours for rest.
Captain W.F. Anderson and J.C. Combs were in charge of the event. Inscribed souvenir badges were given to the members completeing the trip in less than fifteen hours. Among the participants were J.C. Combs, J.T. Calhoun, and Charles Woodard.
I hope this passage will help someone. To my knowledge,
J.C. COMBS was not part of my COMBS family.
