Hi all,

Sandi Compton Mayo here....
Just began reading this strand of emails, and it struck my
curiosity, due to the HERNDON surname connection to
the COMPTON surname.

I descend from Hiram Compton b. 1800 VA; d. 1874 KY and
first wife Jenny/Janey SHANNON, through their son Layne Compton.

I was wondering if anyone may have established the parentage
of HERNDON COMPTON (b. circa 1819 per 1860 Boyd Co., KY
census or abt. 1831 per 1880 Wayne Co., WV census?).  Herndon
(aka Horn) was married to Celia Crabtree  in Lawrence Co., KY with them
and their children were per 1860 Boyd Co., KY census:

Horn Cumpton, age 41, born North Carolina.
Selia (Celia) Cumpton, age 32, b. VA.
Henry, age 8, b. VA.
Harmon, age 5, b. KY.
James, age 4, b. KY.
Catherine, age 2, b. KY.
Elizabeth, age 1, b. KY.

Horn's age is listed as 41 (b. abt. 1819?) and listed
as born in North Carolina, although I suspect that
this bit of information may have been given by his wife
Celia, because he is later found in the 1880 Lincoln
District, Wayne Co., WV living within the John
Jarrel (age 74) household as a farm labourer with
his son James Compton aged 24.  Herndon is listed
as age 49, being born aout 1831....although his age
could have been guessed at by any one of the Jarrel
family members giving this information to the census
taker.

I am trying to update my files and would appreciate any
clues.  Thanks

Subject: [COMPTON] Compton Genealogy Website - James/Larkin connection

Circumstantial evidence for a James/Larkin connection includes the 1820
Guilford, NC census (both James and Larkin are listed), James marriage at the
Stone Meeting House, various reports of James moving between VA and NC, DNA from
my line matching Aquilla (ask Dan Compton).  James was from Annapolis, the same
area Aquilla Sr. is from.

On the contrary, Larkin is not mentioned on James retirement claims as a
revolutionary veteran, or a birth certificate.  Larkin shown up in French Lick,
Indiana in 1830 census.  He is with a bunch of Quakers that appeared to have
moved in Mass.  Larkin married 3 times. Larkin claims NC as his birth place in
most census', but some researchers have listed SC because at least 1 early
census looked like a S, more than an N.  Larkin named most of his male childeren
after presidents.  He did not follow a pattern of naming his children after his
brothers and sisters.  His son Thomas died in the Civil War.

I've been to Orange County, Indiana and saw Larkin's farm land.  Many relatives
still live there.  My distant cousin Lorena McNeely and I worked for years till
she passed away on Larkin's ancestors.  Lorena found a document from NC claiming
Larkin owed money and was nowhere to be found.  I never got a copy of that.
That is probably when he left for Indiana.

There are plenty of Larkin's decendents here in California.  Most of them are in
the central valley, from Sacramento down to Visalia.

I have not been able to update the website for years.  I seem to have lost the
recipe.

Larkin Compton is listed under James as a “what-if” for now, but two of James’
descendants who have been DNA tested are a 100% match with Larkin’s descendants
as well.  A researcher from Larkin’s line has told us they think Larkin was a
son of James & Frances.  I think the potential relationship is currently
circumstantial as you point out, but a group of us are working on finding the
proofs.  The Virginia Chancery Court files online have been a tremendous help in
sorting out the Tazewell and Russell Co VA Compton’s.

I probably should add here that Brett and Ed are also a dna
match with Larkin Compton from Guilford, NC area.
Migrated to Orange County, Indiana.  Researcher of this line thinks
that he is also a son of James and Frances.

I'll look at this in detail over the weekend.

How were you able to find enough information to place Larkin Compton (b. 1796)
as son of James Compton.  There is circumstantial evidence (including DNA), but
no documentation I can find.

Hello,
I just wanted to send you a correction for the will of Larkin Herndon listed on
your Russell Co VA Compton page at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~comptongenealogy/States/Virginia/Russell%20County%20VA/Russell%20County%20VA.htm

Will of Larkin Herndon - father of wife Francis

James Compton’s wife was Frances Herndon, daughter of DAVID HERNDON and FRANCES

Compton’s wife Frances’ BROTHER.  Larkin was married to Elizabeth Terrell and
