If you haven't consulted it yet, you may want to find a copy of F. O. Conant's book on the Conant genealogy published about 1887. Don't remember proper name of it, but the Boston Public Library had a copy of it in the early 1970's.

As to the source of the name, it or its variations can be found in most European languages. Apparently in most languages it is derived from the a word meaning 'king'.

I have found references as far back as King Arthur's day in Devonshire & Cornwall England. Most likely references will be found further back than that if indeed the name derives from 'king'. I suspect that at some time in the distant past, most with the name will find that there are one or more kings in the line, and if so, there may be many 'first' ancestors with the name.
