This will incorporate the slight editing some of you have offered and what I
have learned since I 1st posted on 9/13/2001.
Sunday I received a copy of the full text of a letter written from a long-lived
great-aunt Lucy Butler to my mother in 1962 in response to her geneological
questions. (Have to love these inquisitive, long-lived intelligent ancestors!)
Niw I know why Jemima Ann Butler, the future wife of Nehemiah Travis Conklin b,
Mar 13, 1840 seemed to be related to Emma wife of John Conklin, Nathaniel's
younger brother. They were 1st cousins in addition to being good friends.

Tuttle's 12 sons, Benjamin, John" - but currently accepted lineage is "son of

I have a LOT more data, especially about Nehemiah's line.
I have learned that some families had left L.I. rather than pledge allegiance to
the king when the British occupied the east end of the island, and that there
was a dispute over rightful ownership of the Conklin family property after the
Revolutionary War.
Dr. David Conklin born in 1745 had no living children with his wife Lydia Moore
b: 1751 d: 1806 and assuming he is the same Dr. David who married Susan Bailey,
he was in his sixties when his children were born. I prefer proof to "said to
be" , and it is hard to come by!
I did find collaboration for Nehemiah's entertaining account of the terrifying
gale that they encountered when he was 16 on their brig "the Flying Cloud"
Wreck of the Conklin's Brig "Flying Cloud" at Montauk Point Lighthouse
from http://www.longislandgenealogy.com/lighthouse.html
For many years Montauk Point Light was a desolate, often inaccessible place,
and the early keepers of the light, their wives and families led solitary and
very lonely lives There was only one rock road leading from the Point to East
Hampton, the nearest village 20 miles away, and during the winter months,
snowdrift's usually made the journey to it impossible. Children were taught
their school lessons at the light by their mothers. A few visitors during the
summer made the job of the keeper a little less lonely. Although his work was
often tedious, it had its advantages if he liked bass fishing which was
excellent at the Point. ......
Wives replaced keepers at tending light when they died or when they were
called to other duties such as rescue work. Such was the case in December 1856,
when the brig "Flying Cloud" ran aground on the rocks at Montauk Point and
Patrick T. Gould, the keeper climbed down the face of the bluff in a gale to
save the crew from drowning in the surf. He was awarded a gold medal by the
grateful Lifesaving Benevolent Association of New York. The inscription on it
told of his "courage and humanity saving from inevitable death the crew of the
brig "Flying Cloud," wrecked on Montauk Point December 14.1856." However,
apparently nothing was mentioned of his wife's role in maintaining the light
during her husband's heroic rescue efforts.
