I just saw the show on WTTW 11. If you missed it, it will be on again
wednesdays. It was really good. Try to see it if you can. I knew about
the disaster before, but this went into some personal stories. It also
told what families faced after the disaster, such as the cost of
burials. In some families they faced burying 8 people. They also
talked about at that time the services were held in the homes, and
about some of the benefits people and families received. Orphaned
children received $12.00 a month till they reached 16, which was
considered working age. (don't quote me on that, ...it might have been
15). It also told about other companies offering services such as
delivery trucks to transport the coffins. Anyways, make an effort to
see it. I always had a hard time understanding how so many people could
die from a ship tipping right in the dock area. If it was out in the
middle of the lake it would make sense, but this helped me to understand
it a bit more. debs
