What would be a fair amount of money to send along with your request?

Of course, if you have the luxury of showing up in person, depending on the
location and how busy are the staff, they might let you prowl the books at
leisure. One place in rural Iowa let me do that for nothing, and I had showed up
unannounced and just walked in. They even gave me a printed history of the
parish. Some people are very nice (I have been meaning to send them a
donation).
