Hi Sheila!

My name is Laura Ferguson. My great-grandfather was Francis A. Cooke. Most
of the information I have about him was taken from his obituary. He was
born October 24, 1837 in Liverpool, England. He "went to sea" at the age of
16 and "followed the sea" for 16 years. He came to the U.S. in 1867 and
served for 2 years as a gunner for the revenue service. He married Cora
Brearley in Philadelphia, in 1869, and moved to Emporia, Kansas, where he
worked as a master painter for the Santa Fe Railroad for the next 20 years.
He died Feb. 12, 1916.

His obit mentioned 3 brothers, Atherton, Colin and John. Atherton was in
Chicago at the time of Francis' death, and I located him in the 1900 Census.
I also have located Colin and John(I think the right ones!) in UK and
possibly some sisters in the 1881 British census. I have been unable to
locate Francis' parents, however, as 1837 was the first year that
registrations were required in England, and apparently his was not done!
His obit mentions that he belonged to the Church of England, but I wouldn't
have any idea where to begin looking for church records, as the rest of the
children were born in Wigan.

I would appreciate any suggestions to further my search, and would love to
hear if anyone has any of these individuals in their trees!

grandmother was a COOK descended from the surname KOCH...

Many relations also spelled it COOKE.

Well, let's have a ROLL CALL! List your dead ends, brick walls,
descendencies, etc...
