Subject: [COPE-L] Additional Info on the Cope Knights of England
Date: Sat, 15 May 1999 13:22:03 EDT
First I want to thank one of my Cope members who helped me with a donation to
help pay my postage costs.I have in the last 2 years Photo Copied and sent
out family trees to dozens of people and have never asked for reimbursement
because I believe it is the Christian thing to do. I decided to treat my self
with part of the money I received by buying a 2 Vol set called " The Knights
of England " by William A. Shaw first printed in 1906 and reprinted in 1995
by the Clearfield Pub. Co. of Baltimore, MD. I also bought the book called "
The Order of Americans of Amorial Ancestry Linage of Members " by Arthur
Louis Finnell printed in 1997- total cost $ 150.00. This 2nd book has 300
drawings of Shields of Arms and one them is of the Cope family- and under
this Shield is the name of Oliver Cope descendent of Copes' of England
submitted by Jane Miller Cope Pence listing her linage to Oliver Cope on page
123 in the book.I know that Oliver Copes linage to the Copes of England may
not be correct but I think it is safe to say that he is related to some of
these Cope Knights and from what I have collected so far on my family being
English Copes so am I. Also as Gilbert Cope stated in his book the GERMAN
COPES could be related to the English Copes as well. I believe that all the
Copes who are English are related to one of these Cope Knights I am going to
list here.
I found 7 Cope Knights listed in the book of Knights of England and I will
add 3 more listed by Emma Cope in her book printed in 1901 England.
1) John Cope ( ca 1355-1415 ) Knight of the Shire- 1396- bought Denshanger,
Co of Northants 1397 and Sheriff of Northants- He is listed as marr. to Joan
Newenham- Emma Cope Book.
2) William Cope ( 1450-1513 ) Knight of the Carpet- marr. Agnes Harcourt and
Jane Spencer- Listed ( Granted Coat of Arms by Henry VII ) other sorces list
William Cope in the Battle of Bosworth ( War of the Roses ) 1485. Emma Cope
states that much of this info was obtained from his TOMB and WILL- Also found
in Heralds' Visitations.
3) Anthony Cope- First Cope listed in book of Knights of England - page
63-Vol. II Dubbing date or record date of Knighthood- 24 November 1547 ( ibid
?)- there are two other men listed with Anthony who were Knighted on the same
date- James Bascarville ( At Westminster ) and James Croftes ( ibid ).
This Anthony is listed by Emma Cope as marr. to Jane Crewys and she has
Anthony Cope of Hanwell b) 1490s- d) 1551 )- Anthony Cope - Knight of the
Carpet and listed in book Knights Bachelors.Note: There is a * ( Astrick ) by
these 3 men stating this ( Harl MS. 5117 says 1549, 24 Nov, for these 3
Knights ) I believe that this number is found in records of the College of
Arms where William A. Shaw obtained only a partial listing of Knights of
England. William A. Shaw states that there is a hugh record of the Knights
of Bath alone and states that there is a rich harvest awaiting the man who
will dare to do over again the work which Anstis did nearly two centuries
since ( from 1906 ) on the Knights of Bath only.
4) Sir John Cope- Knight -d) 1557 - This John was marr. 3 times- 1st Bridget
Raleigh- 2nd Mary Mallory- 3rd Margaret Tame- widow of Sir Humphrey Stafford-
This family of Cope has linage in America including Anne Hutchinson- famous
for being banished from the Mass. Bay Colony with Roger Williams- these
people in America were Quakers who became Baptist ca 1635. Franklin
D.Roosevelt and George Bush are descendents of this Cope family.
5) Anthony Cope- 2nd Cope found in book on page 88 Vol. II- Knighted 1591 (
1592 )-
Many men were Knighted in this time frame but one stands out and that is
Walter Harcourt. This is I believe Sir Anthony Cope- b) 1549- d) 1617- Will-
marr.1st Frances Lytton- she died 1600- marr. 2nd Anne Paston in 1602- Emma
Cope shows him Knighted in 1591- Book says Knights Bachelors
6) Walter Cope- 3rd Knight listed in Book -page 102- Vol. II - Knighted- 21
Apr 1603 of CO. OXFORD ( ibid ) - Emma Cope has Walter Knighted 1603 and she
lists him in Kensington-d) 1614- Walter marr. Dorthy Grenville.- Knights
Bachelor.
7) William Cope- 4th Knight listed in Book-page 106 Vol. II- spelling of his
last name shown as Cope ( Coape )- Knighted - 11 May 1603 of CO. Northampton
( ibid ).This is a new Cope for me and I can not find him in the Emma Cope
listings on Cope.
The closest William Cope I find in her book is a Sir. William Cope of Queens
College, Oxford- ( 1577-1634 ) who marr. Elizabeth Chaworth- marr.
1602.Elizabeth is listed as the dau. of Sir George Chaworth b) 1585.I found 3
George Chaworths' listed in the book of Knights- George- Knt- 1584, George
Knt. 1605 and George Knt. 1608.
8) Edward Cope- 5th Cope found in book- page 138 Vol. II- Knighted- 22 May
1605-
OF Northampton ( At Greenwich ) . Emma Cope shows Sir. Edward Cope Knighted
1605-
( 1551- 1619 ) listed in Grays Inn 1568- marr. 1st- Elizabeth Yelverton and
2nd Catherine Aston.
9) John Cope- 6th Cope found in Book- page 269 Vol. II- Knighted- 2 dates
listed- 28 Nov 1695 and 26 Jan 1695-96- OF Kensington ( At Kensington ). Emma
Cope shows Sir John Cope Knighted 1695 ( 1670-1749 ). Marr. Alice Monoux- Sir
John Cope lived Oriel Coll. Oxon.
10) LT- Gen John Cope- 7th Cope found in book- page 169 Vol. I- Knighted 12
July 1743- intalled 1744- This is the John Cope who fought Bonny Prince
Charles and lost.Sir John Cope d) 28 July 1760- buried at St. James,
Westminster
Emma Cope states that she was unable to trace his linage- Emma Cope thinks he
was related to the Copes of Suffolk Co, Eng.Thanks to Bob Cope of OK.and
Betty Mills- I have him listed as a descendent of Sir William Cope, by the
Royal builder of the chapel, to whom he had been Cofferer. Sir John Cope was
Knight of the BATH- listed in book.Sir John Cope marr. Jane Duncombe.
There are many Copes listed as Sir Cope but I have not found when or where
they were Knighted. I also will look up any surname that any of you have that
you believe to be Knights of England, Ireland and Scotland in my books.
The Knights of England are listed in 2 Vol.s- Vol I has over 500 Pages and
Vol. II has
420 pages with 253 pages of INDEXED SURNAMES for both books.
I would like to add that if my family is not related to the Oliver Cope
family and are found to be related to the King George Co, VA Copes I may with
luck trace them back to England to these Cope Knights of England.
Sincerely, David ( Getting Better All The Time ) Cope
