WALSENBURG ATHLETIC Director Dee Betts said that Joanie Butero, Bernadette
Vigil and Michelle Sandoval were among 12 high school women named to the Santa
Fe League All-conference basketball team.
LINDA SIMPLEMAN and Sandi Dotter were named co-chairwomen of the second
annual Whoopee Day celebration set for Saturday, June 21, in Walsenburg. The event
is co-sponsored by the Walsenburg Development Corporation and the Huerfano
County Chamber of Commerce and coincides with the annual Walsenburg Invitational
Golf Tournament.
FIVE WALSENBURG non-tenure teachers will receive letters of non-renewal this
week after the Re-1 Board discussed cuts in the teaching staff due to a
continuing drop in enrollment and the resulting financial squeeze.
25 YEARS AGO
MEMBERS OF the local unit of the American Legion Auxiliary selected Karen
Blase, Walsenburg High School and Lillian Sandoval, St. Mary High, as winners in
the Girls State contest.
THE LA VETA Parent-Teacher Association's talent show featured many children's
acts and was concluded with a skit by Charlie Masinton, Louis Magnino and
Rollie Lehman whistling the theme from "Bridge on the River Kwai."
MAY 25 has been approved as the date for a bond issue election to finance the
cost of construction of a proposed 17-bed addition to Huerfano Memorial
Hospital.
50 YEARS AGO
WALSENBURG'S rapid growth is indicated by the facts that the city is
definitely overflowing on the east and west with numerous small homes and construction
in the city during 1939 was listed at $50,000. Since Jan. 1, 1940, 21
building permits have been issued with a total value of $12,400.
A SPECTACULAR oil-fed fire at noon today completely destroyed the store,
filling station, cafe and residence of Mr. and Mrs. Bennett Garlick at Ojo
Springs, located 24 miles west of Walsenburg at the east base of La Veta Pass.
NEW ACTIVITY in the La Veta oil field will begin immediately when drilling is
resumed with a keystone, steel rig on the Hamilton lease, six miles east of
La Veta where a test well of 5,000 feet has already been started.

HUERFANO County Commissioners have tentatively postponed action on two
proposals to issue industrial revenue bonds in excess of $4 million to help fund the
proposed ski resort Panadero.
ON A 4-3 vote, Henry Valdez was appointed council member from Ward I during
Walsenburg's City Council's regular meeting Tuesday. He replaces Walter
Wheelock who resigned in March.
LA VETA'S recently elected Town Board held a special meeting Tuesday evening
to discuss the future of the town's refuse dump.
25 YEARS AGO
TWO MALE and eight female buffaloes arrived Tuesday and were released into a
fenced pasture at Lathrop State Park, where they will remain for an indefinite
period.
TWO ST. MARY High School seniors, Gail Marie King, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Emmett C. King, and Adelle Solomon, daughter of Mrs. Joseph Solomon, have been
awarded academic scholarships by St. Mary of The Plains College in Dodge City,
Kan.
NAMED EDITORS of the 1965-66 Paladin staff at St. Mary High School were Diane
Tesitor, news; Toni Herman, layout; Rose Ann Nardini, literary and Mary
Tressell and Lillian Sandoval, yearbook co-editors.
50 YEARS AGO
NEARLY 1,500 persons attended the grand opening of the new L&L Photo Studios
in Walsenburg when Stephen Lamme and Charles Loughmiller introduced to this
city one of the finest photo establishments in all Colorado.
HEAR YE! HEAR YE! The Kangaroo court of Walsenburg, Huerfano County, Colorado
will be in session Saturday, Apr. 20, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
All men found guilty of not growing facial adornment in behalf of the Black
Diamond Jubilee must appear before the court for fine or sentence!
A CREW of 27 workmen will begin excavation and rock quarry work Apr. 23
preliminary to construction of Walsenburg's long-sought $50,000 filtration plant.
The project will continue for six months and a total of 88 men will be
employed.
