10 YEARS AGO

A LETTER of resignation was accepted by the La Veta Re-2 Board of Education
from High School Principal Roger Brunelli, who cited his intention to take over
his father-in-law's farm at Primero.

ASSESSED valuations are up, according to Assessor Virginia Aragon, whose
office mailed out notices to some property owners in Huerfano County last week.
"In some cases," Aragon commented, "the assessed valuation on property has
doubled or even tripled."

IF YOU don't think you were counted on the Apr. 1, 1980 census and your
completed census form was never picked up, hold on to it just a bit longer, a
follow-up will be done during June.

COMPETING FOR the title of queen in the beauty pageant sponsored by the
American GI Forum's local chapter are Camellia Martinez, Olivia Galvan, Rose Marie
Tafoya, Ruth Lee Bachicha, Betty Bachicha, Yolanda Manzanares and Roberta
Martinez.

CAROL GALASSINI, 17-year-old daughter of Mrs. Esta Galassini of Walsenburg,
is one of 33 4-H Club junior leaders from Colorado chosen to attend a national
short course on citizenship in Washington, D.C. in July.

THE CHUCK WAGON Cafe in Cuchara is now open for the summer under the
management of Nick Morelli of Walsenburg.

50 YEARS AGO

A TOTAL of 136 Walsenburg students received high school diplomas at
ceremonies this week. Ninety-four graduated from Huerfano County High School where
Crist Lovdjieff is valedictorian and George Summers salutatorian. At St. Mary, 42
graduated and an additional eight students in Gardner received diplomas at the
branch of the county high school.

THE REV. Howard J. Delaney of Golden has been selected as the assistant
pastor of St. Mary's church to take the place of the Rev. Maurus Zabolitzky.

THE VOGUE, a $15,000 new super-service station erected at the corner of Third
and Main Streets by Oscar Santi of the Santi Oil Company, had its grand
opening Saturday, June 2.

10 YEARS AGO

HUERFANO COUNTY Assessor Virginia Aragon has made the decision: increases in
assessed valuations recently mailed to property owners will not go on the tax
rolls until 1981.

CITY FULLTIME employees got a raise of $75 per month and part-time workers
$37.50, plus increased fringe benefits, by action of the Walsenburg City Council
in Tuesday night's meeting.

ONE OF Huerfano County's and Walsenburg's largest and oldest business firms,
Santi Motor Company, will close Monday, June 30. The Ford-Mercury dealer has
served the county and the San Luis Valley for 50 years.

25 YEARS AGO

A GENERAL fund budget of $555,850 for the 1965-1966 school year has been
presented by John S. Mall, superintendent of schools of Huerfano School District
Re-1, with the largest contemplated expenditure to be $377,510 for instruction.


WALSENBURG must prepare for a doubled population, or between 10,000 and
12,000 persons, within the next 30 years, the Huerfano County Chamber of Commerce
was advised at its luncheon meeting Tuesday. The city's population in the 1960
federal census was 5,071.

RENEE GOEMMER, daughter of Dr. John and Rose Goemmer, was named "Miss San
Isabel Electric of 1965" last Saturday at the La Veta High School during a beauty
contest held at the annual stockholder's meeting.

50 YEARS AGO

UNUSUALLY low temperatures have brought rekindling of stoves and fireplaces
in Walsenburg and heavy frost has been reported in Gardner and Red Wing. Snow
has fallen on the mountains within the past few days.

CUCHARA CAMPS, Huerfano County's outstanding scenic summer attraction, is
rapidly filling this summer with most cabins occupied. Authoritative sources
declare that Cuchara camps annually brings an income of $10,000 into the county
through its vacation facilities.

PROFESSIONAL safe crackers, probably from Denver, today were blamed for
stealing between $200 and $300 in cash and gasoline from E.C. Stream's merchandise
store and Bill Hall's service station in La Veta.

10 YEARS AGO

SUMMER WILL get off to a rousing start in Walsenburg Saturday as the
community takes on a festive air for the second annual Whoopee Day celebration and the
fifth annual Walsenburg Invitational Golf Tournament.

WALTER L. WAY of Aspen has been hired as the new superintendent of schools
for Huerfano School District Re-1. He was the choice of the Re-1 board and
superintendent's screening committee from 11 finalists out of more than 30
applicants.

GRAND OPENING of the new Coal Mining Exhibit Hall at Fort Francisco museum in
La Veta has been set for the Fourth of July weekend.

25 YEARS AGO

A SPECIAL election on a proposed $250,000 addition to Huerfano Memorial
Hospital to be financed by a two-mill tax levy will be held next Tuesday.

THE CITY OF Walsenburg is looking at raising the present mill levy of 15.75
mills by four to six mills squarely in the face. "The city cannot continue to
operate on a mill levy that has been in effect nearly 20 years" said Mayor Joel
Chambers.

THERE ARE 152 boys and girls in Huerfano County who have begun work in city,
county and state jobs in connection with the Neighborhood Youth Corps project,
Domenic Nardini, director for the local project, reported Wednesday.

50 YEARS AGO

ANNOUNCEMENT WAS made today of the purchase of the Village Inn service
station, 1003 Main, by Frank Feroni, popular Wonder Bread distributor in Walsenburg,
from R.W. Keigley, who operated the station for seven years.

POPULATION of Huerfano County has dropped 1,161 during the past ten years,
Dr. George W. Dwire, state census director, has announced. The 1930 population
was 17,062 and this year it is 15,901.

AUGMENTING the proposed La Veta rural electrification project with a similar
project now functioning in the San Luis Valley is the course probably to be
followed to assure immediate inauguration of rural power service in southwestern
Huerfano County, according to County Extension Agent Phil Miles.

10 YEARS AGO

LORI MARTIN, 12, and Brenda Benson, 15, were selected Junior and Senior 4-H
Fair Rodeo Queens and will reign over the Fourth of July weekend rodeo
festivities in La Veta and during the annual 4-H Fair later this summer.

DR. JOHN C. DAVIS DVM has joined the Rio Cucharas Veterinary Clinic west of
Walsenburg where he will be associated with Dr. Patrick Hemming DVM. Davis and
his wife Patricia Jane are living in La Veta where he has owned a house for
the past 10 years.

ARCO Oil and Gas has officially announced intentions to proceed with its
carbon dioxide project in the rugged Sheep Mountains of western Huerfano County
after having explored the site since 1972.

25 YEARS AGO

THE SALE of the Huerfano World by Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Thomas to three Kansas
men was announced today. The new owners are S.M. Nations, Wichita, George F.
Stuckey and William L. Mitchell, both of Hutchinson. The Thomases have been
owners since May 1964.

THE PROPOSED $250,000 addition to Huerfano Memorial Hospital in Walsenburg
was approved in five of six voting districts. Total vote was 685 to 455.

THERE ARE now close to 100 cabins and cottages at Cuchara. Texas leads with
about 30 summer residents; Kansas is next with about 25 and Colorado with more
than 20.

50 YEARS AGO

AMONG THE approximate 20 backgrounds used by Pacific Studio in Hollywood are
four of Walsenburg, considered by the studio as the "Ideal Small Town." The
scenes include the following buildings: 1 - Saliba's Liquor Store, Busy Bee
Cafe and Walter's Poolhall; 2 - Dick Abstract, Temptation Sweet Shop and City
Hall; 3 - Wayt Lumber Go., Haney's Barber Shop and Gamble's Store and 4 - Silver
Dollar Inn, Quality Shoe Shop and the U-B Market.

A CHECKUP of vending machines being conducted by the county assessor's office
reveals that there are 256 within Walsenburg, four less than last year.

LA VETA'S new $50,000 water system was placed in operation June, 25, after
being under construction for nearly one year, a project that employed almost 100
men.
