Subject Anne/Maria Bjorgulfsdtr Øen b.1825-d.?= m.? Osmund
Svenningsen/Svennungsen VEUM/VEOM
Hello-
I would like some information on the last few years of Anne/Maria
Bjorgulfsdtr Øen's life, ( b.1825), spent in Pueblo CO. She was last noted
in the Wisconsin 1880 census. Anne or Maria's son, Henry William (HW)
worked as a local politician in LaJunta/Otero County, and so presumably she
moved out to Colorado to be with him. She was last seen in 1893 at the
wedding of HW Adsmond, and was not known to have been alive after the year
1900. Her address at that time was "the poorhouse" in Pueblo, and it is
written in a letter that she died in Pueblo, CO.
It was said in our family that she was "mentally ill". Her grown sons had a
great deal of difficulty managing her care at the end of her life because
they were not able to afford appropriate care. We think that she died in a
poorhouse in Pueblo Colorado between 1893 and 1900.
I would like to find records of her life after 1880 and prior to 1900.
Her two sons are buried in Caldwell Idaho and were retired from a later
mining life.
A family story tells us that my gr gr grandfather, Osmund
Svenningsen/Svennungsen VEUM/VEOM, left Fyresdal, Norway in 1852 for Black
River Falls, WI, US.
Unfortunately our relative, Osmund, may have left Anne in the lurch.
Osmund fathered two boys with Anne, also known as Maria, (see other names
below) who were born in Jackson County, WI. They were Iver Veom, 1855 [5 m W
Springfield Jackson 1860] and
Hans Veom born 1857 [2 m W Springfield Jackson 1860].
He said she couldn't keep house. He left her to raise these boys fairly
early in the picture, according to the story. But the source of the story
has many other things just plain wrong, and I wish to know if Osmund "left
her" by death instead. Osmund was a blacksmith and a published author in
Norway. Later, she showed up in the 1880 WI census as a professional
housekeeper!
More detail on Anne/Maria:
Anne Bjorgulfsdtr Øen also known as:
Anna Veom, aged 35, in Jackson County,WI,USA in 1860 also recorded as:
Maria Adzman, in 1880, living next door to her grown son, Iver Adzman in
Jackson Co, WI, USA.
Anne may have taken the name Adsmond toward the end of her life, because her
sons HW (Henry William), born Hans and Iver/Ivar used this name.
She may be under records in Pueblo, Colorado as Anne Veom, Anne Veom, Anna
Veom, Anna Veum, Maria Veom, Maria Veum, Anne Bjorgulfsdatter; Anne
Bjorgufsdatter.
Anne Bjorgulfsdtr Øen was 30 years old when she left Fyresdal, apparently
alone, for Jackson Co, Wisconsin in 1854. We think that Anne or Maria was
born in 1825.
If I am understanding Ancestry.com records, she was first married to Jacob
Olson, an older Swede, who died. I'd like to know if there were children
from that marriage and what became of them.
I am interested in knowing as much as possible about Anne, both of her life
in Norway and in Wisconsin and Pueblo, Colorado., such as how did she earn a
living between 1880 and 1893, when did she die, where is her grave in
Pueblo,CO?
Thank you so much for any thoughts, ideas, snippets.
Sincerely,
Sue Fox
