Hi List,
"Barque", a three masted sailing vessel, or "Four masted Barque", a four masted
sailing vessel. A ship is a three or more masted vessel carrying square-rigged
sails on all masts. The Barque's aft or mizzen mast carries a Spanker sail, a
fore-and-aft sail extended by a boom and a gaff, and one or two smaller
fore-and-aft sails above the Spanker's gaff. Most New England Whalers of the
1870s period were Barque rigged. The four masted Barque was a 1900s period
vessel pushed out by steam and seamen's wages.
I believe the above is correct, but it was limited to the books I have here at
home.
