To all in hope,
This geneology is an infuriating business isn't it! My last message
regarding the Penhaligon family of Truro (18.10.97) was in search of
an Arthur Penhaligon. He would have been my great-grandfather on my
mother's side and it was known that he married a Jane Beard. Through
the useful work of CFHS I now have the marriage certificate of ARTHUR
PENHALIGON and ELIZABETH JANE BEARD. Arthur was a coal carrier and
lived at 4 Rosewin Row, Truro. He married Elizabeth 12 Sept. 1899 at
the age of 21.
So what is my problem? Well being born in 1878 is a reason for not
being found in the 1871 census but its not a reason for not finding
the rest of the family. The marriage certificate informs me that his
father was a SAMUEL PENHALIGON butcher deceased. I am not absolutely
sure about the Samuel because the writing is so bad but am reasonably
o.k. about it. I have searched the 1871 census for all Penhaligon's
1800 -1871 and nothing makes sense with my present level of
knowledge.
The great thing about the census is that you get a impression of the
bigger picture in terms of the family. Am I going to have to knife
and fork my way through this family going from name to name - in the
dark. They must exist.
Any ideas from all you budding sleuths.
