Dear Tom, Anne and all,
We certainly have hedgehogs in the UK - and they DO hibernate, I wonder if
what we call hedgehogs, you call groundhogs.
On the first of the month, to bring luck, the first thing I try to say out
loud is "Rabbits, rabbits, rabbits" having tried to remember to say "Hares,
hares, hares" as the last thing I said on the last day of the month!! My
mother always tried to do this too and she was Welsh. My husband, however,
whose background is Devon/Cornish always tries to remember to say "White
rabbits" as soon as he wakes up. We usually both forget!! but do not,
however, seem to suffer any worse luck for it during that month!! ;o)
I have recently bought an American/English dictionary (to enable me to fully
understand the correspondence on this list <g>) - but alas, groundhog/hedghog
isn't listed!!
Best wishes
