It is also important to remember that the subject of a death certificate is
dead. The information on the certificate is provided by an "informant". The
informant, usually a family member, dealing with the death, may not have been
concerned about dotting the "i's" and crossing the "t's" on a death
certificate.

Although born in South Dakota, my father always referred proudly to his
father's Cornish heritage; yet, my grandfather's death certificate from 1933
has "England" as his bithplace.
