In many places there has been vandalism of cemetaries, some done by unknown
individuals of dubious intelligence, but here in Perth, Western Australia we
had monstrous vandalism by a government department.
In East Perth, one of the original cemetaries around an Anglican church was
appropriated, and the site used for the construction of a building for that
department. I can remember the furore when there were graves bulldozed, and
in some cases the bones of the deceased disturbed.
(Perth was not settled by Europeans until 1829, so the graves were
comparatively recent when this was done during the 1950's or 60's)
The headstones were removed where possible, and now are located in the
grounds of the chuch itself, but I'm not sure if all were saved. Some
headstones I can remember reading when as a young boy (about 8 or 9) saying
...... who came to Perth on the Parmelia....
This was one of the vessels which carried the first Europeans to Perth.
