Having just spent one of the saddest days of my life, I write this letter
to all the wonderful people on this list who took my original message about
Grave destruction to heart and got out there, passed the word and did
something about it.
As many of you know, I grew up in Norfolk and was subscribed to their
list. While I was not actively researching anyone there, I know a lot of
that area, it's old families and history, so was often able to answer
questions posed to the group.
I also sent the Grave destruction letter to that group, knowing what
tremendous history lies in that county, but sadly today, I have been
lambasted,
accused of giving the UK a black eye, accused of having nothing to back up
my claims, and accused of "seeking to damage pride in a country by
pretending to improve pride." and many more insults by a few people on that
list - none of which actually live in the UK I might add. I have been asked
to "stick to Genealogy and nothing else!"
I have been devastated by these accusations when all I sought to do was to
enlighten genealogists and other interested in history as to what was going
on. I thought it had "much" to do with this wonderful hobby of Genealogy,
but have also been asked not to write about anything but Genealogy by that
list's owner.
I had been asked to write about this matter elsewhere, but have decided
being publicly insulted for something about which I truly believed, is more
than I can bear so decided against it.
I have to tell none of you how bitterly homesick I am and have been for
many years. One can accuse me of anything but never of damaging my
country's pride of giving it a "black eye". As you all know, my writings of
grave damage applied to all parts of the world and not just the UK.
I have decided to put no more effort into this grave cause, for my health
will not take being brought to task like this in a public forum, so I hope
that while I have unsubscribed from the Norfolk list, I might still find
pleasure and friendship in this one. I wish all those who are still
interested in the saving of our graveyard treasures, would still follow the
problem and stay involved, but I must back out at this point and will not
answer any more mail on the subject. I can only say that I do know for a
fact, that already one Graveyard has been, in the last two days indexed -
just hours ahead of the auctioneer, for those who, in the future will need
to know of their ancestors who were buried there. In fact, it might even be
saved with a great movement locally to ask the Bishop to reconsider what is
being done to a wonderful little church Apparently he was the one who had
given the orders originally. Several people - just from hearing the index
have already found ancestors whom they were not aware of, being in that
little churchyard. How many others are about to share a similar fate I do
not know. I can only hope that what little I have done to bring this to
global attention as done some good.
I thank you for listening and the friendship I have found here. This was
the first list I joined in the L lists and have enjoyed many topics here
regarding the mining, quilting, pasties and even Vegemite without seeing
anyone be publicly reprimanded for speaking of anything but names and
dates. Maybe I am wrong, but I think there is much more to Genealogy than
just those things and thank Yvonne for not being that rigid in her outlook.
I have sent a similar letter to the Midmarch and Powys lists - the only
other lists to which I now subscribe.
Best regards
Liz
