Ian (and all),
I know your comments were not directed at me, Ian...still, I believe my own
point has been misunderstood by some....blame it on my own inept email
writing, or whatever...but I do want to be absolutely certain everyone
knows that *I*, Sandy, do not in ANY way mean to malign the work of CFHS. I
think it is a *fine* organization, I like it...and I do support it.
I would *like* to see it move forward to provide more in the way on
services to online researchers....and I am disappointed this was not a
topic on the agenda at the AGM....and that there does not seem to be a
committee in place studying this issue.
But this does NOT mean I do not appreciate the organization and the things
that it has done and continues to do!
Many people may not be aware that all FHCs do not even HAVE headquarters
buildings with research facilities and libraries open for your use (both
for members AND non members!) CFHS does!
The ONE thing I would very much like to see changed before I become a
member is a change in bylaws to enable voting privileges (via postal mail,
email or proxy) for members for whom it is not practical to attend the
AGMs. Perhaps it could be agreed that those living outside a certain radius
of Truro could vote in this manner. However, to be quite fair, I think
provision also should be made for elderly or disabled members for whom
attendance is a physical hardship.
I don't think it's too much to ask to have a voice if you are a member.
It's not as if there's some sort of membership "discount" for those who
can't vote <g>. (Yeah....I'm American....we're real big on that taxation
without represenation stuff, remember? Something about all that tea in one
of our harboUrs <g>)
Anyway, I think CFHS uses the standard bylaws from the FFHS....and I don't
think it would be too difficult to amend those to fit the local society. If
I'm mistaken about that, just let me know.
I don't think the CFHS can be all things to all people. It has to set goals
it feels it can attain as part of its overall mission. Whether the society
will decide various online services are appropriate remains to be seen. But
under the current structure, the very members who are most likely to *need*
and to support these services, have no vote. I hope this much will change.
