Hi Listers,
Reading about these terrible stories I thought I would tell you of my own
recent troubles with this subject.
Whilst searching for the graves of my great grandparents in Truro public
cemetery I spoke to the sexton and asked him if he had the details who were
buried in the cemetery because many of the headstones were missing. He
showed me the plot where my g grandparents were laid to rest but the
headstone was missing. Since my g grandmother only died in 1938 I was
surprised that the grave was unmarked but the sexton told me local builders
were breaking up the headstones to use as hardcore for the building sites.
If that was not bad enough when I visited a friends house a few weeks ago I
remarked upon their slate fireplace. She told me that the surrounds were old
slate headstones { face down } and that the builder said that they could be
taken after 100 years if no one had maintained them. Can anyone confirm
this?. Unfortunately my friend will not let me dismantle her fireplace to
find out whose headstones they belonged to. You never know it could even be
my great grandparents, stranger things have happened!!!
