Sandra asks if the stamp tax (exhorbitant)payable today on the purchase
of a house is the same as the 10s tax on a "bond". It is the same
form of what might be called taxation by stealth and is also payable
on the purchase of shares. Probably other forms of it as well but can't think
of any offhand.

Members of the list will have seen the stamp on apprenticeship indentures
and all property conveyances for example. Not sure when it was first
introduced but would hazard a guess at mid-1700s.

The whole subject of direct and indirect taxation is a very complicated
field.
