Greetings, Mark & Mike,
Yes, sand was carried by barges (12 ton) along the R. Camel between Padstow and Egloshayle. Generations of my BEAR(E) family, who lived near the river at the village of Sladesbridge (in Egloshayle parish), were bargemen. The railway meant that the sand could be carried further inland. I understand the barges operated from the 1600s until about 1930 when road transport took over.
