Hello, Dr. Angwin and all,
I caught this message both on Cornish-L and the Jo Daviess IL list.
Unfortunately, I was dealing with a car repair, my family's Christmas
and the virtual party, and I had misplaced the following passenger list.

My KNEEBONE family went from Cornwall or Devon probably in 1842 and were
listed in Galena, Jo Daviess Co. IL in the 1850 census.

The sister of an in-law found this passenger list for a ship called "The
Orient" and assumed that because there was a John KNEEBONE and an Elizabeth
KNEEBONE aboard, they were "ours". I have some doubts.
According to a researcher who contributes to both TheShipsList-L and
Emigration-Ships-L, there were two ships called "The Orient". Their careers
covered different time periods. Quite a bit is known about the larger one,
but not this smaller, earlier and slower ship.
For credit, this is held by The Detroit Society for Genealogical Research
Magazine, Volume 26, 1962-1963.

There are no ANGWIN passengers but there is one TIPPETT family. I hope
they belong to you, Dr. Angwin.
I wonder if anyone has a clue whether the date was that of departure from
Falmouth, or arrival in New York. If 19 May 1842 is the departure date, it
almost surely eliminates John and Elizabeth KNEEBONE as being my ancestors
because they had a second son born to them in July of that year in Jo
Daviess Co IL and two months probably wouldn't have been long enough for
a small ship to make the passage in time for them to be in Illinois that
early. Their oldest son, John KNEEBONE, would have been two years old on
this passage and isn't listed, and this John and Elizabeth aren't together
as husband and wife as the others appear to be. For all I know, these two
could be brother and sister or cousins. Their ages aren't in sync with
mine on the 1850 census, but that isn't hard evidence. Age discrepancies
certainly are nothing new.
It's interesting to note that some given names are spelled in full and
others are abbreviated with the last letter above an underscore. Also
the KASKAT children are separate from their parents, and there are others
who don't appear to be with the family they should belong to. Some wives
and children apparently were sent for by husbands who had made the passage
earlier, as most of us are acquainted with. I would wager that
"[?A]BLECOCK"
is TREBLECOCK.
Otherwise, I'm posting the list for the benefit of everyone who may luck
out and find a missing family or individual. If any of you recognize a
family, I would be interested in learning where they went and by what
route.
Perhaps some traveled together to the same destination.
I would welcome any comments or further information about my KNEEBONE
ancestors, but have nothing further about anyone on this passenger list.
Best Regards,
