Hi Violet,
I'm a descendant of John Moyle, Farrier, mentioned in this posting.
What is the DSGR magazine that has the article about descendants of
John? -I know my Moyle Family Website folks will want to read that. Is it a
current article or is it the one published in1962? We all know about the
Orient story - a creaky, leaky old ship - that Thomas MOYLE(brother of my
greatgreatgrandfather) and his wife Susan FOXWELL came over on. (WOOPS!! -
just saw the answer: Detroit Society for Genealogical Research).
The Jane George listed on the Orient is also a MOYLE, sister of
Thomas and William Moyle of Breage/Helston area. (John, the Farrier, had 13
children). I think the several FOXALLs listed here are really FOXWELLs.
Anyway, I'm looking for the name of the ship that my
greatgrandfather came on, too. He was William(son of William, deceased)
Moyle, came to New York by sailing ship (then to Hazel Green, Wisconsin) in
1845. He came with his mother and step-father (Jane Williams Moyle CARDEW
and Henry CARDEWof Breage) and also sister Rebecca Moyle who later married
an Englishman (perhaps a Cornishman) named RICHARDS. I am searching for
more information about these Cardews and Richards.
My greatgrandfather's comments on the trip from Cornwall to
Wisconsin were brief. They were five weeks and three days crossing the
ocean, then they came from New York to Chicago by a canal ( I assume they
went up the Hudson and then west by the Erie Canal), and from Chicago to
Hazel Green, Grant Co., Wisconsin in a covered wagon.
There are living descendants of the Thomas and Susan Foxwell Moyle
family who have a copy of the Diary that was kept of the Orient voyage. That
diary might have dates that would show you when they left Cornwall and when
they arrived in New York. Try the Moyle page on GenForum. Also try these
Moyle/Foxwell descendants - Lorna Dunklee mailto: and
Carolyn Lean Kline mailto:
