An excerpt from a song by Herbert Thomas ....

Aw, you don't want fancy denners when you're sweaten bare your bones,
An' feel as ef you could digest a barraful of stones,
'Tes for somethin' braave and solid that you knaw your sperit groans
And a hoggan like stull tember you could chow, comrade!

The hoggan of course is described as different from a pasty. It doesn't sound
very appetizing, but as the excerpt says, hardworking miners need solid food.

hogen - dinner-cake, baked pastry cake (D. "hoggan" and corruptly "hobbin"):
this and fugen are both later variations of whyogen.
