Greetings all from chilly Perth
When our Cornish group dresses up for a Display at a Celtic Gathering I
usually wear (from top to toe) an old straw hat with a black band,
shaped something like a 'boater', man's long-sleeved shirt covered with
a check shawl (I use the Cornish National tartan but I have pictures of
Newlyn fishwives draped in a checked wool shawl), long black skirt with
a white pinafore on top and a red petticoat underneath, heavy socks and
black shoes. Some of the other women wear a bonnet and I believe a
hessian pinny could be 'de rigeur', probably made from hessian bags.
On Australia Day, here in the retirement village where I live, we had a
parade of 'Australian' costumes. Some went with the inevitable beer
cans and esky's, but I suddenly thought of my Cornish dress, went as a
'Pioneer' woman and won first prize!!!
Cheers
Pat
