Hi Clem,
It's a cheap version of the Japanese 'Geta' a sandal type of
footwear, flat rubber or plastic sole with a piece that comes up between the
big toe and the next toe and continues over the top of both sides of the
foot to about half the length of the sole to hold the thing on. The term
flip-flop comes from the sound it makes as you walk in them. Could never
wear them myself, but then I'm a Pom, not Australian. VBG.
