Hi Samantha,
I've tried to narrow down where your family came from because I have never
seen the surname GURGENVEN before... in fact, the online IGI shows no Mary
Gurgenven born anywhere in England at any time! So I'll come back that in a
moment. Perhaps other listers can help you here.

Samuel JEWELL christened 30/12/1827 at Philliegh, which is a tiny hamlet and
parish on the Roseland Peninsula of Cornwall, just across the River Fal from
Falmouth, which was the main shipping port for Cornwall. There is a
connection across the river by the King Harry Ferry.

His parents were William and Grace Jewell, for whom I can find no marriage,
but William looks as if he may have been born at nearby Probus, about 6
miles (10km) to the north in 1783. This would need checking out, but if so,
the JEWELL / JUELL line goes back at Probus to around the 1670's.

The first child born to William and Grace was Joseph, christened in 1813 at
Philleigh.

Samuel JEWELL married Mary Ann GURGENVEN at Philleigh on 17 April 1852, and
just three months later, they christened their first child Mary Ann on 18
July 1852 (oops!!!).

Since this looks like a shotgumn wedding, and there appears to be no record
of Mary Ann GURGENVEN, I am strongly inclined to suggest that she had come
in to Falmouth by ship - possibly from a Scandinavian country, because it is
a Scandinavian sounding name, and ships from that area brought in a lot of
timber for the mines at that period.

That is as much as I can give you... at least it looks like the right area
to search, and it looks like they had more children than you thought.

Only record I could find for Richard GILES was a christening at Ludgvan
(near Helston) on 19 Jan 1823, parents Richard and Jane, but I found no
marriage. The christening is a year after the birth date you give but this
is not unusual.

Best wishes,
John Coles,
in Launceston, the Historic Capital of Cornwall.
