"To all Parochial Clergy
Microfiche film of Parish Records
Some years ago, the Church of the Latter Day Saints undertook to film and
put on microfiche the Records of many of our Parishes. The exercise was
completed and copies of the microfiche versions are held by the Diocesan
Records Officer in the County Archives. They are available for all to view
as microfiche records.
Currently legislation and copyright rules specify that Baptism, Marriage and
Burial Registers are in the public domain and are therefore not subject to
copyright restrictions of any kind. The present copies of the records are
becoming worn and need replacing; AND THERE HAVE BEEN REQUESTS FROM
INDIVIDUALS TO HAVE COPIES OF THE MICROFICHE VERSIONS. VVhile there is
nothing in current legislation to prevent or limit such copying, the
original copying by theChurch of Latter Day Saints was, in a few instances,
only completed on the "understanding" that further copies would not be made.
If your Church was one of those few who put such a restriction on the future
reproduction, and you still feel that such a restriction is appropriate and
sustainable, please let me know at Diocesan House.
Please do not call me to agree or give consent - if 1 hear nothing from you
by 31 July 01, I shall assume you are content.
B C Laite
Diocesan Secretary"
