Beaurocratic Vandalism.
An article appeared in the paper (the Sunday Times) today 13/1/02 regarding the matter that hundreds of headstones have been removed at Karrakatta Cemetery without relatives knowledge.
It is part of a project to create space for new graves - Karrakatta is almost at the end of its "use by date" and obviously the government intends to extend its life at the sacrifice of older graves and headstones.
They advised that they advertised but when I contacted last year to see which areas were going to be affected I was not given the courtesy of a reply. Obviously, direct relatives of those in old graves will have also passed on by now so it is left to the descendants to ensure that they are not desecrated. I have some very old graves in the cemetery that are still in good condition and will be very angry if they have been removed to make way for new graves.
On one hand they cemetery board is wonderful with its website and information and on the other is destroying our history. Unfortunately, I live 1,000 kms from Perth and cannot get there to investigate which areas are affected.
