Hi List,
I found this article in 'Life in Cornwall' 1883 that states there were 16 John Richards's living in the village at that time. They all had nicknames to distinguish between persons. I also counted 4 William Williams and several other names with two or three the same. No wonder we have such a hard time trying to put our families together right!!!
Another article was telling about cutting wages in 1884. One person protesting stated he received 14s a week, rent free a small cottage and a bit of "taty garden". He had a wife and seven children. All the children were to young to work. He worked every day of the week and ate no idle bread. No wonder when these poor people saw advertisements to work in other places they didn't hesitate to go.
