My understanding is that the Charter setting up the Duchy of Cornwall in1337
stipulated that only the first-born son of the monarch could be duke of
Cornwall - thus Prince Charles became Duke on the day the present Queen
succeeded her father. But what would be the situation if Prince Charles
died before the Queen?
This did happen in 1751 when Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales and Duke of
Cornwall, died before his father George II. In the book "Duchy of Cornwall"
published in 1987 Frederick's son who later became George III is not listed
among the Dukes of Cornwall. This points to Prince William of Wales not
succeeding to the Dukedom if his father died before the Queen. The Title
"Prince of Wales" is another matter since its creation is at the discretion
of the Sovereign - the Queen after an appropriate interval could appoint
Prince William, her new heir, "Prince of Wales". Re titles for Prince
William of Wales - precedence seems to suggest that a Royal Dukedom could be
created for him - possibly on his marriage. Any children he will have will
be called Prince/Princess ----- of ------
(Prince William's title).

The change in succession - an elder daughter succeeding before a younger son
does get raised whenever there is possibility of the situation occurring
and then gets shelved - I have memories of it being raised just before the
birth of Prince Charles and of Prince William. The Kingdom of Denmark did
this a few years ago. If Parliament did consider changing the rules it
would mean the other countries of which the British Sovereign is Head of
State (Canada, Australia, New Zealand and 14 other nations) would have to
agree.
