I've been following the thread aboutthe pasties. Here in Southern
Califoirnia, most people have never even heard of them and there is nowhere
to buy them unless they are brought is frozen from someplace and even then I
wouldn't know where to get them.. So I make my own. It isn't that hard. I
have my Cornish descendent grandparents' recipe and I don't change a thing
except for using Crisco instead of lard. I make about 10-12 of them and
freeze them in ziplock bags. The house smells so good while they are baking.

The best ones are baked by little old Cornish women who bake them at
home and sell to a local clientèle who are not about to let non-locals
know the secret. I know one such lady in Halsetown that makes some great
ones. I generally charm my way into the homes of all and sundry when I
smell a pasty being cooked, I can smell a pasty being cooked in Amalebra
from the top of Trink Hill. The pasty I am used to does not have a flaky
pastry which a lot of the shops seem to make these days, but a sturdy
crust that will do some damage if it fell on your head.
