Subject: School petition at Burra

Hi All
I posted the following to the South Australian mailing list the other
day, and Ann suggested I send it to the Cornwall list, so here it is.

Hi All
In 1849, the names of 29 people appeared on a petition to the Colonial
Secretary for government assistance for a school at Kooringa (Burra).
Over half the petitioners listed their residence as Burra Creek (along
with my 3rd great grandfather, Richard Grenfell). Five of the people on
the petition were also on board the "William Money", the ship Richard
and his family came out on.
I have transcribed as much as I can and have included this at the base
of this message in case any of you have ancestors amongst these parents.
Only about half of them signed their own name.
The copy I have is a photocopy of a page of Ian Auhl's book, "The story
of the Monster Mine - The Burra Burra mine and its townships 1845-1877."
You can see a scanned copy of my photocopy in a link from this page of
Jennifer Burrell's genealogy website
(http://users.ncable.net.au/~jburrell/gen/hutchins/hut_oli.html). The
scribbles on the side of the image were from me clarifying names on my
photocopy when I viewed the microfilmed copy of the original at the SA
State Archives a few years ago.
Some of the names below that I was a bit uncertain of, I found from the
Burra History Group's web page on the miners
(http://www.burrahistory.info/BurraMiners.htm). This web site is an
excellent resource for any of us with ancestors who went to Burra. The
home page is here - http://www.burrahistory.info/
If someone happens to be going to the archives at some stage, I would
love a better copy than the one I have. When I visited (from
interstate), I was limited for time and didn't obtain a photocopy. The
numbers at the top of the petition are 6.S.6 (or 6.5.6) 1888/1849. I
can't find the petition in a search at the State Records website but
these numbers may be a clue for someone.
If you are connected to any of the names, I'd love to hear from you.
Anything that I was uncertain of, I have put in square brackets. The
formatting may get mucked up a bit. There is also an accompanying
letter to the petition which I have transcribed but haven't typed up
yet.
Regards
Shelley
