Hello,
John you seem to have woken us Cornish Nz Descendents up!!!
We have just shifted house (once again - my husband is a builder!!)
When I finally got my computer ready and working I had 1,380 emails to
delete or reply. However that is achieved, and now I am trying to answer
some.
My Cornish ancestors are on my father's line. His mother was Annie SAWLE.
Her parents were James Wright SAWLE (born August 1835) in Gerrans, Cornwall.
and Caroline MARTIN (born october 1836) in Stithians, Cornwall.
James Wright SAWLE was the only surviving male issue - he had 7 sisters,
Emarita, Jane, Sarah Ann, Mary, Margery, Anna and Eliza Bensley. - all born
in Gerrans, COrnwall. THeir parents James and Mary (DILLON) emigrated to
South Australia in 1840.
James Wright SAWLE and Caroline MARTIN married in Agaston, South Aust. 11th
Dec 1854. For some reason he decided to emigrate with wife and 7 children
to Christchurch, NZ in 1870 ( have not found the ship they travelled on
yet???) They had a further 4 children in West Melton, Canterbury. I have
a lot of information about the MARTIN family as a distant cousin has written
a book about the family. THe SAWLE name in NZ (on this line) has died out,
as even although there were 6 sons there were lots of "old maids" and
Batchelors. One of my father's cousins was Matron on Middlemore Hospital
for years - Margaret SAWLE I think!!
Two others were School teachers in NIsland - Eileen SAWLE and Dillon
Jenkins. Another cousin married a John TICKNER farmer from Dannevirke.
One of the SAWLE daughters ( James Wright's sister Margery Dillon SAWLE)
married a Richard KEMP and I think they must have emigrated to NZ also
Richard was born in Cornwall also, but I have not got that far with my
research
If anyone has any connection to these families I would love to hear from you
regards, Janet Drinnan (ms Macdonald)
