Sandra,
I have a Thomas Couch Jr who married Mary who first received an Enoree,
Spartanburg land grant in 1766. I have projected that this Thomas who was b
1720 Brunswick Co, VA to Thomas & Elizabeth Couch and moved to Orange
County, NC. The Bristol Parish Register notes that this Thomas and Elizabeth
gave birth to a son named Matthew on July 25, 1725. Althogh I do not have
proof, I suspect that this Matthew was a brother to my Thomas Couch Jr.
Another brother was William Couch who was with Thomas in Orange County, NC.
The Enoree riverside in Spartanburg is filled with Couches. An 1980 book by
A. B. Pruitt, Abstracts of Spartanbug County Land Grants is filled with
references to Couches buying and selling land around Enoree. Included in
these are known sons of Thomas and Mary. Enoree river Couches I have noted
are: Matthew, Thomas, John Sr, Middleton, Joseph, William, Z. A., Agnes,
Anna, Matilda, James and Benjamin. Most lived in Spartanburg and some in
Laurens County, SC.
I do not know who Matthew married but I would wager he was kin to all my
Couches along the Enoree River.
Robert Hill Couch
