Kay,

I just returned from a family vacation and my son who resides in Arkansas
brought me the two biographies on Harvey Couch and I had a great time
reading of the most famous and wealthy Couch I have run accross. In one of
these, Harvey Couch, the Master Builder, author Winston P. Wilson (Broadman
Press of Nashville, 1947) his ancestry is described something like this.
The Couches were in New England as early as 1662 and in Virginia prior to
1700. The Patriarch William Couch said his ancestors fought in the REV. War
and involved in the Battles of Yorktown, King's Mountain, Guiliford
Courthouse and Cowpens. The Couches served with Francis Marion (The swamp
fox) and General Pickens of SC. Thus Harvey's ancestors may have come from
CT, VA, SC, GA, and then to Arkansas. In 1850 the Couch family was in
Thomaston, GA. William Couch's son Quincy, Grant and daughter Eliza Couch
Rose went to Calhoun, AR in Colombia County AR in about 1853. Quincy became
Sheriff of Colombia County, AR. Quincy's son was Thomas G. Couch who was
reportedly a real hell raiser in his youth. He married Mamie Heard, settled
down and became a farmer and Methodist preacher. Their son was Harvey Couch
b April 21, 1877. Harvey was indeed a financial/business genius. He
founded the north Lousiana Telephone Company, founded the Arkansas and
Mississippi Light and Power Company, owned a railroad, and was friends with
Presidents Cooledge, Hoover and FDR. He marrried Jessie Johnson in 1904 and
had three children: Harvey Jr., another son and daughter Catherine. He was
one fasinating man who had not even a high school diploma but was on the
Board of Trustees of SMU and Peabody College.
